Applying for DLA

I'm sure this has been done hundreds of times but I'd just like some advice on what evidence I need before I apply?

My DS ( 7 ) teacher told me i should apply for him last year & i have kept meaning to but I've had so much other stuff going on I kept forgetting ( I was diagnosed with ADHD and my DD is on a waiting list for an autistic assessment, it's just been a year of mayhem and shock )

DS is suspected of having ADHD, dyspraxia and dysgraphia. Dysgraphia is a neurological condition that affects peoples ability to be able to put their thoughts onto paper, so handwriting, drawing ) my school hadnt heard of it until I came across it, thankfully they listened to my concerns and are seeking him a diagnosis / support for )

DS needs help with a lot of things

He cannot dress himself properly. His shoes are always on the wrong feet, shirts back to front or inside out, same for pants. Cant do up buttons, can only do zips if I do the Initial putting together..... never seems to realise and unless I spot his shoes hes been known to have them on the wrong feet all day. A few weeks ago we were in the shop after school and I realised he had 2 left feet on 🤦‍♀️ ( his shoes need replacing frequently so always buy him 2 of the same pair)

He cannot hold cutlery properly or cut his food up properly. He always ends up with food on his face, hands, his tshirt and pants, the table. His writing is unreadable and he cannot read what he has wrote nor hold a pen or pencil properly. I have bought him things to help with his pen grip ect and they have made no difference.

He gets really tired after short walks and complains of his legs hurting. He gets genuinely upset and you can see him trying to power through ( I dont drive and I cant afford taxis everywhere ) i have recently bought him an electric scooter with a seat and it's been absolutely life changing for him and me! Honestly been such a nice 2 weeks with no crying or complaing or a drained boy afterwards.

He cannot clean himself properly after going to the toilet, its everywhere. His clothes, the toilet seat, his underwear, the walls ( he clumsily tries to clean himself up but ends up making more of a mess )

He has a speech impediment and people struggle to understand him. Even family. His L's, R's and W's all get mixed up

He falls over all the time and really injures himself. He has had more dental trips this year than I have in the last 3 years. I frequently have to buy replacement glasses for him as he falls over / breaks his glasses frequently. He is waiting on his 7th & 8th pair this year ( might not seem a lot but he was only prescribed glasses for the first time in September just gone,

His temper has gotten a lot better since I was diagnosed with ADHD and have learnt different ways of coping ect but he still has quite a bad temper if he is overwhelmed and I have had to replace a lot of furniture + TV,s, even a shower door and window over the years.

His clothes need replacing a lot sooner than mine or DD's as his end up ripped or too stained to re use. I always buy 2 pairs of shoes at a time for him as he goes through them so quickly

School can back up that he cannot dress himself, cant hold a pen or write properly, his speech, his clumsiness and injuries, when we did a referal for CAHMs for him his teacher knew so much about him that I wouldnt of even thought to mention as I'm just used to him being like that ( he doesnt like bright lights, gets too hot frequently, struggles to remember instructions and need it breaking down into very small steps, can be very emotional, I cant even explain it but you have to be a certain way with him in different ways everytime to stop a meltdown and it's a tricky one because you've got to read him quickly and be right 🤦‍♀️😅 )

His teacher recently wrote his tests for him whilst he told her the answers and she can confirm he gets tired quickly and complains about his legs hurting,

But things at home, how can I prove that? I could just be making it up couldnt I 🤦‍♀️ I'm not, I wish he didnt need the support he does, I dont mind helping him at all but I know che older he is getting the more he is noticing and hes starting to get upset about some stuff

He is currently in the middle of a referal to the educational physcologist, school contacted them after I told them about my concerns he had dysgraphia, they sent over some tests ( sorry I cant thing of the names, some were physical like hopping on one leg and others were his writing and maybe some other stuff, sorry my memory is terrible ) and then told school they needed 6 weeks of work off him to look at before they would think about accepting him

Also - do I just word it all like I have here or do I need to go more into depth?

The advice I was given is fill it out based on what their worst day looks like.

I have found doing it in chunks helpful, as it was quite unexpectedly emotionally draining

Evidence from the school and communication with the ed psych, along with copies of the referral letters for ADHD and DCD, should be enough. Is DS under SALT? Has he seen OT and physio? Do you have paperwork from any injuries requiring treatment DS has had?

I second the Cerebra guide.

By all means describe what a worst day is and say how often that occurs, but don’t make out every day is like the worst day that is fraud.

As an aside, you should request an EHCNA now. On their website, IPSEA has a model letter you can use.

It is poor the school had not heard of dysgraphia. Even if the class teacher hadn’t, the SENCO should have.
