Regression

This is a difficult one to write as my just over 2.5 (31 months) year old son isn’t diagnosed but I suspect he is ND for a few reasons but We aren’t even in the system such as a pead appointment or anything but are going to get a private salt to assess him in the near future, and if she feels there is something to explore then I will go down that road.
at this age he could just pass for a typical toddler with a speech delay.
it’s a difficult one as he is definitely on the latter end of development in speech and language but it’s progressing. This last week, he’s been poorly with hand foot and mouth (his main symptom was blisters on his hands and feet, some in his mouth and a really sore throat and cough
He just doesn’t seem to be using his words as much as he has been. And it’s really worrying me. He’s more wingy and whiney.
he had been telling me things like showing me a green pen and saying ‘it’s green’ and stuff like that but since he’s been poorly, he’s just a bit within himself.
how common is a regression when a child has 100s of single words, can put 2 together, knows numbers and colours, animals and their sounds, and can name body parts. If he does regress will he lose all of this? I’m so worried this is the start of him regressing ? Or is it him feeling rubbish and just a bit within himself ?

It isn’t rare for some toddlers to regress when they are unwell. If it is something more than that, no-one can tell you how much DS will regress, I’m afraid.

If you think DS has ASD, I would request a referral for assessment now. The HV or GP will be able to refer.

Hello! My son is very verbal but when he had hand foot mouth he was so poorly with his mouth that went back to gesturing and single words for a couple of days. He also regressed in play for the same days (just no energy and too much pain)

@ItalianMUM89 thanks so much that’s made me feel so much better. He’s slowly getting better and getting back to himself each day. How long did the HFM last for your son? and how old is he?

So he had a very bad form of HMF (his peditraician admitted this was the worst version she so in 36 years working). However he was very sick 3 weeks and could only eat very little. He was back tom himself one or two days after his mouth blister went away. He was 2.2 years old by the time (in march).
