Possible ADHD in 6yo (who has ASD diagnosed)

Hi all

Ds (6) has been diagnosed with ASD (when he was 5. He is currently Y1). I am wondering whether he also has ADHD and if medication would help.

He has a 1-1 at school, if he sits with her he can complete his work but if she tests him and leaves the classroom he just gets up to go look for her. He also often does things without thinking through the consequences but I'm wondering whether this is just ASD? when he was in his diagnosis test for ASD I mentioned ADHD but the Dr brushed it off and said because he can concentrate sometimes (e.g. he can sit and do a lego set which he loves doing, read a magazine he likes, do school tasks he enjoys) it's not ADHD. But she didn't "test" him properly for adhd, it was just a mention when he was being tested for ASD. She also said how it could hurt him to have medication if he doesn't have ADHD.

DH is against diagnosis atm as he doesn't want him to go on medication (feels he's too young and could cause him to become reliant on them), but I'm thinking that he might benefit from the medication as he does stupid stuff, we talk about it after and he understands why he shouldn't do it but can't seem to contain himself sometimes.

I'm london/Surrey borders so any reccs for a private clinic would be ace. I mentioned to thr SENCO at school but I had bombarded her with about 50 other things so she didn't really give much of an opinion.

Thanks!

Just because DC can sometimes focus doesn’t rule out ADHD. Although the signs of ASD and ADHD overlap, so what you describe could be down to ASD. But, ADHD can also be co-morbid with ASD.

I would speak to the SENCO again.

Dr Maite Ferrin is excellent.
