Hi ladies,
I posted here a year and a half ago about my son being autistic and how it was daunting and new. He was 2.5 then and was non verbal, didn’t wave, clap, point or imitate. I was not mentally stable finding out he was autistic and couldn’t see light at the end of the tunnel but you ladies were amazing and have lots of advice. I am back for more advice. My son before he turned 3 started labelling things and had around 100 words and now his language has exploded. still short sentences and sometimes one word but so great. Hr can clap, wave, point, imitate etc and sings nursery rhymes all day. his favourite being the wheels on the bus and shouting it, perhaps his vocal stimming. He is a gestalt language processor and scripts but all in context always and has started to form sentences of his own. How does this progress further for anyone in a similar situation. He knows his numbers to 100, all his phonics, shapes, animals, colours and is hyperlexic so can read although not always understands what he reads but points to things in a book when asked correctly. Ge still bolts off outside but has improved a bit. He started asking for toilet regular for both bowel movements but has stopped asking now and happily does it in his nappy. any advice how I can support this? I put him on the toilet frequently and when i ask do you need to go he always without fail replies No lol. I still do worry about his future, he still runs up and down and sometimes ignores his name being called but his receptive language has come leaps and bounds and can follow simple instructions albeit sometimes on his own terms. Can you tell me if your child is like this and if so how they progressed please, I know all children are different but i’d be interested to know of the possibilities. Thank You from a worried Mama

You’ve just basically described my daughter! She’s 4 in July. The speech therapist is confident that the more language she acquires, the more she will be able to form her own sentences and start to discuss things like concepts and memories. Just this weekend she has come in the room twice now to tell me what she was just doing! It feels amazing, like there’s a part of her brain unlocking.

That’s amazing for sure. last year august worries whether he would be able to talk, so grateful to hear mummy from his mouth.

@Mammaofboy wow your little boy sounds amazing and has made such incredible progress. You must be really proud!

Do you mind me asking how you helped him make progress over the last year and a half? As my DD is 3.5, non verbal and has a very limited understanding of receptive language.

Thanks a lot!

I really recommend “more than words” it’s what our local NHS salt uses too

Mammaofboy · 05/05/2024 19:35

I did buy more than words but didn’t really end up using it.

I took lots of picture and printed them such as mummy, daddy, car, apple, nappy etc and wrote the word underneath it and stick it on the cabinets along with shape posters, colours, animals. i would take two picture and say where is daddy and then mix three pictures etc. I used reading eggs app on ipad great for learning shapes colours etc matching. ms rachel taught him sign language and basic words such as eat want more etc. Phonics video etc Hope this helps

@Mammaofboy @valensiwalensi thank you both very much. I have More Than Words and have started it but need to get back to it.

I will definitely give the pictures a go and that’s a great idea sticking posters up. Will look into Reading Eggs. Thanks a lot!

@Mammaofboy
This such great news, my dd 2.5 is just the same, no gestures, words, stimming but has ok eye contact. I worry out of my head and now have joined the More than words course. But shall try your techniques. OP may i kindly ask, did you turn the pictures around so ds had to guess which was daddy, or did you just make both pictures visible to choose which is daddy?

where you pictures very big?

Im wondering if i have to go to snappy snaps to get photographic standard pictures printed. Thanks in advance.

Mammaofboy · 08/05/2024 00:09

Yes I understand the worry is immense. I just took pictures with my phone and printed them online they come in the post. I showed both pictures or he would have to guess. x
