Hi, my "very high functioning" daughter has her ADOS assessment next week. She's 5. I've said we're going to the doctor to see if we can help her with her feelings. If I get chance to explain the appointment again I'll say it's so my husband and I can help her better with her feelings.

What phrases/descriptions did you use? I don't want her to think there's anything wrong with her. Or that she needs to be better.

Secondly, I'm looking for a handful of stories to read with her (usually at bedtime) that have ND characters. Not necessarily overtly or labelled as such, but so she can engage with characters like her and/or that she's great as she is/everyone is different. What do you recommend?

Thanks guys 😌

My son just had his ADOS at 4: he's academically bright, although obviously struggles in other areas. We've seen SLTs and OTs, so I explained it was a check up with a doctor, where she would ask him some questions and play games with him, like the SLT had done. I may have said it was to help with speaking and listening. You could also add that it's a check lots of children have.

I love "Gina Kaminski Saves The Wolf" by Craig Green. The protagonist is about 5, very smart and straightforward, and very clearly autistic, though the word isn't used. She struggles with identifying emotions and sensory experiences, but also solves a problem in a clever and unique way. It's also a lovely funny book. My son really likes it, too. I've also heard great things about "Wonderfully Wired Brains" but I think my son is a bit young for that one right now.

For age-appropriate books, there is Leo and the Octopus, Misha Makes Friends and the Pablo books, based on the TV show.
