... I feel overwhelmed by the amount of books out there and wonder if anyone here can recommend where to start?

my specialist subject will be ASD, but I am interested in anything anyone here thinks is an SN book worth reading and any recommendations might help others too?

I was looking at a book called "steps to independence" and I was going to buy it, then thought I would ask the wise folk on mn for suggestions....

please and TAI.

I've not read much either, but of what I have read I would recommend -

Playing, Laughing and Learning with Children on the Autistic Spectrum by Julia Moor (lots of useful advice, she is a parent to a kid with ASD, so that shows in her sympathetic attitude).

Martian in the Playground by Clare Sainsbury (more of interest for seeing the problems older children experience with the school system).

Parent's Guide to speech/language problems by Debbie Feit (would be invaluable to those who aren't sure whether to be concerned or not, still good though to read something by someone who "gets it" iyswim)

It Takes two to Talk by Ayola Manolson (or Pepper/ Weitzman, depending on the edition). Lots and lots of practical advice about encouraging communication

A Dog called Henry isn't bad - it's a biographical book about a kid with ASD who is helped to communicate when the family get a dog (!!). It's really much better than it sounds, as it's not a miracle cure type story, you get a picture of the years of difficulties the boy has, and how he and the parents deal with them.
One I would avoid is the fiction book "Daniel isn't Talking" - it's a bit too fluffy and lightweight IMHO - Daniel goes from not pointing never mind speaking to speaking in sentences within about 6 months!
