i joined and have posted the odd thing on the schools and communication board, but haven't been on there for a while, as I felt that it wasn't geared up to DS's type of problems iyswim.

I joined about 18 months ago and have found it to be a really friendly forum with lots of help and advice - somebody from Mumsnet recommended it and I haven't looked back since!

2shoes - if you write a brief introduction in the General section (click on the 'New topic button) I'm sure you'll get loads of replies welcoming you to the forum. From then on, just join in with any post that takes your fancy or start one of your own. It might also help to read the top post on the 'General' section, titled, 'Being a member of Special Kids in the UK'. Hope that helps and I look forward to 'meeting' you over there!

I must warn you though that it soon becomes highly addictive!!!

I joined ages ago but never posted. I felt a bit of place as although dd's condition is serious she has a "normal" life. (Sorry, didn't know how to phrase it )

I have already found a child that I know in rl so think it will help. although my heart belongs to mn.
sometimes I need to ask questions and have been more or less told no one here knows the answer.

I'm on there. I'll see if I can find your welcome thread!

The only thing I would say about it is it is very "wheelie" orientated - there are an awful lot of posts about wheelchairs, wheelchair adapted vehicles, etc. etc. And not so many about behavioural or cognitive issues. But until I can find a board for "serious cognitive and social impairment but potters around cheerfully, falling over a bit" Kids In The UK, it's pretty handy.

tis good isn't it

Fio, she has mild hemiplegia as one of her minor conditions. "Walk" is probably putting it a bit strongly - it fluctuates according to health and seizure activity and she couldn't go more than 3 or 4 steps on an unfamiliar surface before falling over. She has a blue badge. But inside the house, and particularly with someone holding her hand, she gets about well enough. . It's a huge bonus on one side because we don't have issues with hoists and downstairs bedrooms and stuff (though getting her downstairs is a bit of a mission - she doesn't "understand" stairs) On the other hand, we're going to end up with a 16 year old in the house with much of the physical capability of a teenager but still a developmental age of 8 months. Which will bring its own challenges - the little girl next door but one who goes to school with Helena has far greater mobility problems, but then again if they put her down somewhere she stays there. She doesn't stagger up to the telly and smack it vigorously.

As I recall, 2shoes, they only use your real name on the introductory thread. After that we all go by our secret squirrel names.
