Hi our son has ASD and speech delay. we have our mmr vaccination booked this week we have a double slot booked and 2 Nurses are going to be available to help get everything done quicker. I am really worried how I am going to get him in the surgery and the level of anxiety and distress that will follow. Has anyone got any useful tips or anything that has worked for them? Thank you

Morning

What is the fear specifically? Is he afraid of GPs, transitioning to somewhere new, dealing with pain?

DD3 loved watching the Bing episode of vaccination......

Tbh he has a huge fear of anything that may have to be done even clipping toe nails causes huge distress, going anywhere new is a huge source of anxiety and distress. We have tried lots of strategies think I am just worried about the fallout afterwards.

And also how to physically get him in the door I obviously want to protect him with vaccination but am also aware how much this will affect him.

If DS can’t walk into the surgery and you can’t carry him, do you have a pushchair you could use? Or will the nurses come out to the car (if you have one)? Some areas have a nursing team who do home visits if that is easier.

You could try using EMLA cream too.

Hi we don't have a pushchair I think I am just really concerned and worried how he will react and the aftermath. He often gets in more distress if we prep before and use pecs etc and previously when something similar may have happened he has then not left the house for 6 months and he has just started at school in a specialist setting. Apologies if I sound like I am rambling and not thinking of positive solutions it has been a really tough few years and we have had a reasonably stable few weeks so I think it's worry it may go back to how it has been previously.

Big hugs!

without knowing DS it’s hard to say what will work or not - it’s always bit of a guess. DD3 got a big icecream once she stopped crying. Might be worth calling the GP and see what they suggest?
