DS2 lost all ability to eat any new foods when he regressed at 20 months and has eaten about six foods for the last 9 years.
Having found a new technique and having caught him in a peculiarly compliant place he has, in the last months , eaten

french beans ( one)
carrots ( half a dozen full portions)
garpes ( three bunches)
Raost potato ( half a small one)
pear ( three big bites)
apple ( six or seven whole ones)
brocolli ( a bit so small you need a magnifying glass - but its a start)

Not much in the scheme of things. But a mountain for my boy.

Fantastic!

Chuffed to bits for you. I've got a dreadful eater too - or I had! - and I know how good it feels when your child starts on new foods. It's great to share the news too - how many 'normal' parents would be thrilled for you because your kid's eaten an apple!!

My ds is 9 now and he's just started eating sandwiches. I'm doing backflips with excitement and nobody can understand why.

deeeja · 23/03/2008 20:54

That is fantastic.
Well done to your ds!

Thanks all. It is nice when others get how great this is. We are a sad bunch arn't we

I think this has been a combination of things.
He has huge obsessions and so I have harnessed them. We started with a star chart that just required three stars for him to get a reward. Once he got used to that concept I added eating a food as a target for a reward. But this time I finally wised up to being patient so, for the first few goes he only needed to bite a piece of apple as big as a pea to get his star. I kept rotating the foods and kept the amounts small. We began with apple and carrot.
I have gradually upped the size of portion but suddenly , in the last two weeks , it is as if he has stopped being frightened of new food and is piling into decent quantities.
Once he was prepared to try it he found that some were nicer than others and he started actually asking for the ones he preferred.Amazing to me

Three days ago he asked spontaneously for an apple .

I have to say that this is after NINE years of only eating roasted chicken , gfcf bread or rice cakes with honey, vanilla puddings and gfcf biscuits. So hopefully there is hope for us all.

that's ace news. If DS ate any veg other than pizza or carrot cake voluntarily I'ld be ring the tabloids, never mind posting on here

coppertop · 23/03/2008 21:47

Wow! That's fantastic!

Can I send ds2 to the Pagwatch house for a while? I'd be hosting a street party if he ever managed to eat even a quarter of those things.

That is really great. I will use that to try to get my Ds to eat some veg.
