Autistic daughter and toileting

I'm just after some opinions. My daughter is 4 years and 5 months old and has been toilet trained since she was about 2 and a half. She hasn't had any major accidents in about a year, she may wet her self slightly if she doesn't make it to the toilet in time. She's independent on the toilet and will just take her self when she needs to go. She is pre-verbal so won't ask to go to the toilet unless she is being fussy and you ask her what do you need? Then she will say I want toilet. So all in all she has been fully toilet trained, in school as well, for a good while. My issue is that the last two weeks she has had an accident every day at school. And the last couple days at home she has been wetting her self completely without even attempting to go to the toilet. Coincidently, these accidents at school started happening around the same time she flooded the class bathroom (not majorly) with the tap and I was told that they have to lock the doors. So I'm concerned that they're locking the toilets and she isn't able to access them herself and won't ask someone for help. I'm waiting on results to see if she may have a UTI but she has no other symptoms. Regression at this age is very unusual from what I have researched. If anyone has any opinions/insights/experiences I'd love to hear them.

Have you spoken to the teacher and explained that she needs access to the toilet as soon as required? Does she have an EHCP?

She has been with the same teachers over a year so they know her well. The flooding of the bathroom is a new thing she's done which is why I suspect that. Currently awaiting her EHCP draft. Just wanted opinions before I 'accuse' school of locking toilets.

If her urine test comes back with so sign of a UTI, the toilets being inaccessible does seem the most likely explanation. Could they have just been locked on that particular day and your daughter still thinks they are locked?
It does seem a bit odd because loads of reception aged kids need pretty quick toilet access without having additional needs.

As well as ruling out a UTI have you considered constipation?

Amarie321 · 28/01/2024 18:38

@vjg13 very possibly she may just think they are locked and hasn't tried them again.

@SearchingForSolitude didn't even cross my mind, would that lead to her having accidents? Because she does get constipated quite regularly.

Yes, constipation can lead to or exacerbate accidents.

That's really interesting, I've never come across this before!
