Why does DS struggle with these

My DS is seven he has ASC, Speech and Language delay and attends a generic special school. He knows his numbers up
to 50 maybe beyond, can subtisise, write his name with help, knows all of his phonics, and can read the word stop. His teacher says he has the understanding it’s just the next step. Why is he struggling?

Next step in what?

Can he sound out words?

How old is DS? Struggling with what - what are ‘these’?

The next step in reading, spelling and maths. He’s age 7

He can sound out the letters to the word stop but that’s it

It could be for any number of reasons e.g. difficulties holding attention/focus, difficulties with working memory, processing difficulties. Has DS had his eyes tested? What does the teacher say when you ask? What support are they providing? Has DS had an EP assessment? Is he receiving ongoing SALT?

DS is in a class of 15 children with a teacher and 3 TAs He has 1:1 teaching with his handwriting and from what I can gather is at least writing the first letter of his name independently, he is taught maths in and english in a group of 3 children to one TA. He has an EHCP, he saw an NHS speech therapist from two and a half until he was five going on six.. He stared at his new school when he was six and receives fortnightly speech therapy there. He’d never had an eye test. He’s teachers very happy with his progress. They class have a Twitter page where they put photos on of what the class have been learning and from the photos it looks as if most of his class are writing sentences but DS isn’t

An eye test would be a good idea. Also a hearing test if DS hasn’t had one.

It may be DS needs a smaller class and teaching by a teacher rather than TA.
Has DS tried any assistive technology? What did the EP say - is an up to date assessment required?

Try not to compare to others in the class. Special school classes can cover a wide range of needs.
