Hi All

I am wondering if anyone can help shed light on this for me please, as I have been given no information by school and am totally in the dark.

I have had a letter from my 6 year old's school to say they have been identified as needing additional support with gross motor skills to support physical development. This will be in the form of additional weekly PE sessions with a local coaching company.

No concerns have ever been raised previously and parents evening was just before Christmas and also according to school report everything was at expected level.

There is a family link with ADHD but not sure if that could even be of potential relevance.

I emailed school to ask for more details but was told I would only receive more information after the first session, which is a bit frustrating.

Thanks in advance!

It means the school thinks DS needs support with gross motor skills and the intervention will help. Gross motor skills include things like hopping, skipping, jumping i.e. movements that involve the big muscle groups as opposed to fine motor skills such as threading beads and handwriting.

That's really helpful thank you and sounds like maybe not something I should worry too much about then? I was just quite taken aback by the letter with no explanation or anything previously being mentioned but if that's all it is I will relax a bit now!

DD2 did these when she was in infants - and she enjoyed them (although she mainly enjoyed being the big kid going around the classes to fetch all the little kids) and they did seem to support her confidence with her gross motor skills - she has a diagnosis of dyspraxia/DCD

I missed your reply, sorry. I wouldn’t worry, but I would want to speak to the teacher and SENCO.

My DCs both did "Fun Fit" at school. DS1 did it from year 1 to year 5 because he has ASD, LD, difficulties with coordination, hypermobility and lacks strength in his core. He had a lovely time with coaches who gave him lots of positive attention.

DS2 did it for a year or so as well. I am not sure why as he was a competitive gymnast at the time. He had lots of fun too.

Thank you all for your replies, they have made me feel far less concerned! School are calling me this week to give a bit more information too. Thanks again!
