Is a private diagnosis of AS acceptable to all authorities?

You may have read my other thread. This probably doesnt just refer to Asperger's but other conditions too.

I have learnt that the route for diagnosis in my city is a tertiary service. That is, you go to your GP, your GP refers you to the Psychiatrist who covers your area of the city, then this Psychiatrist refers you to the Asperger's Service. I thought this was long winded, but I let my GP make the referral.

In the meantime, a senior lecturer in AS at the university offered to do the preliminary work for diagnosing my daughter and pass her on to a consultant privately at a much reduced rate. The time scale of this is less, Ive heard from another AS mother that the Lecturer is a very personable chap and he diagnosed her son. He comes to your home and its much less daunting. Great I thought.

Until today. I had tried to speak to the admin person at the AS service earlier in the week and left a message. She got back to me. I told her about the above. She said the lecturer concerned was not a clinician and couldnt make a diagnosis. I pointed out that he was passing us on to a clinician who was an NHS consultant who worked for her service and she said she didnt think that arrangement existed. She also said we would have to have a diagnosis on the NHS if we wanted to access support and services for our daughter. Is this true?

I don't think that is true - our initial diagnosis was from a consultant called Dr Daphne Keen , who works privately but also for the NHS at St George's in Tooting. Because of her NHS credentials her diagnosis definitely opened the right doors, though we also later got the NHS diagnosis just as a ticked box. Get the dianosis then go to the top person as this admin person sounds like they are just being difficult imho!

sorry, meant to say that we got a private diagnosis, missed out the crucial word!

Thank you AMAM (if youre an ancient middle aged mum Im probably a fossil!).

I think youre correct and this person I spoke to was just a bit of a know all.

Another mum who is part of the local As network has contacted me and confirms that the person doing our private dx is very good, as he saw her child.

I cehcked out today about what would happen if i went to get a private diagnosis today for my ds. The case worker at the LEA said they would not accept a private diagnosis! I also spoke to a lady today who went private to get her son diagnosed as ASD and she spent over 10k to get the LEA to accept her sons private dignosis. I suggest ringing the LEA if oyu require the diagnosis to access help and support within schools.

Thank you all. Bonkerz, schools arent part of the problem as she is 21.

Why would not a local authority accept a private diagnosis? What difference does it make whether a private individual pays for a consultant paediatrician/psychologist's time or the NHS pays? A medical diagnosis is a medical diagnosis.
Won't the tribunal accept the diagnosis even if the local authority won't?
