Has anyone had any experience with strattera?

DS has tried equasym which didn't suit him and made him really anxious. The paed then put him on prozac which seems to have helped his anxiety but beyond that isn't doing much. I have reduced his dose over the last 2 weeks so that when i see the paed next week Nic can come off stright away if the paed agrees and start strattera instead.

I just wondered if anyone else had experience of this drug and whether they had found it helpful.

TIA

J has been on it a few weeks and the difference has been dramatic in terms of behaviour, concentration, mood. Loved it! Much fewer side effects than the Equasym (that J was also on before) and was eating OK and much less stressed.

But now he's been taken off it...gutted.

So far, I really think Straterra has been great. Only thing putting me off it is that fact that it's so new (5 years) so no evidence on long term side effects, unlike methylphenidate - Ritalin, Equasym etc.

Hope it goes well for your son

Thanks givemesleep

I saw from your thread that J had been on it but didn't want to hijack.

Chosing my words very carefully here.

Before putting your child on any mind drugs, ask the doctor where in the world has this drug been licenced, based on clinical trials for use in pre adult populations.

I think you will find the list is not a long one.

Well thats the same for a lot of drugs talies - prozac certainly isn't designed for children. I know the things to look out for as i have done the research. I just want feedback from people who have experience with the drug.

Nothing like scaring people.

Thank god you have.

Lots of parents just take the medics word.

Not realising how much CIBA/GEIGY spend on medic courting

If you want the full details on this drug I can copy them over from the BNF

It's a drug that seems to act on the brain in a similar way to psychostimulants like Ritalin but without being a stimulant itself.

A claimed advantage is that it does not have abuse potential unlike many other compounds.

It has a pretty long list of known side effects including everything from flatulence to liver problems.

There are also a whole list of other drugs which should not be combined with this drug, then again your doctor if they are half competant will have checked this.
