My DS has a A-Z puzzle in which you slot letter shaped pieces into letter shaped holes on a board. The holes in the board have pictures too - Apple, Ball, Cat, Dog etc. My DS is very good at the puzzle and knows most of the words. A few days ago I told him to put the W for Whale in. He turned it over and said 'Monkey' . He was right, it was the 'M' I was impressed at the time, but I noticed this morning that the picture is actually a Mouse and not a Monkey. He knows the word Monkey very well but I have never heard him say Mouse. Could he have learned somehow that the word monkey starts with an 'M' ?

Sorry for rambling on, I have just completed (and photocopied his DLA form so I feel I have to think about positive things for a change!

WOW well done to your DS, sounds very bright .

I certainly sound like he knows that monkey begins with M.

Hope it all goes well with DLA, Im just about to do ours for DD .

It sounds like he does know monkey begins with m, yes and to turn it over from a w is fantastic!. My DS is also learning his letters and one therapist who saw him said he will probably learn to read quicker than he will to talk, as he learns letters by shape and is very good visually. Is your DS ASD? I am finding the jolly phonics dvd great for letter!

It is good actually, it keeps me guessing at times as the pieces don't always fit in as you think they should. I got it a few weeks ago in Mothercare. It is one of these wooden slot in boards

Jolly phonics DVD and CD are books are all in Early Learning Centre. I use the bit on the DVD where the nice lady says the letters very clearly, while the letter appears on screen (think it's called "Saying the letter sounds"). My DS has learned 19 out of the 26 letters this way, which really helps as it shows his school that they shouldn't just give up hope on him !
