read a few times recently about parents having to 'fight' when it comes to having a statement.

How come? We just got told Ellie would have a statement done and that was that.

Is it to do with different area's or a certain childs needs?

Hope I dont sound ignorant. Just interested.

I just wondered how some parents have a fight on their hands?

I'm a teacher and although my students all have statements by the time they reach us (secondary) I've heard it sometimes comes down to 'resourcing' ie funding/money. LEA's are reluctant to spend more money. Hope that's not the case for your little girl and she gets all the support she deserves.

I think it is all down to funding I'm afraid. Up until recently I had heard that it was pretty much routine for a child with DS to be statemented. That has all changed now , so I am told. It seems that too many children in my part of Kent have been statemented and they now are making "cut-backs!" I seems that I will have a fight on my hands.

Depends a bit on your area and what you want. We didn't have to fight for a statement (ds1 non verbal autistic) but we had a bit of argy bargy to get what we wanted on the statement (speech therapy in parts 2 and 3- and full time 1 to 1 support). The original statement was so vague it would have been next to useless.

we had no trouble getting statement for our three,
my twin girls had one at five and my son had one by his third birthday,we had no problems,it seems to be harder to get when kids are older and i know many families have been refused once there child has been at school for a while, i have a mate who has twins with downs one has a statement one doesnt, she is now trying to get one as her girls are due to go to comp in september one goes to special needs and has mobility probs and is tube fed ect,
other one has been in mainstream and has no medical needs.

We had to appeal when we first went to panel as they threw out the SALT report as it was 10 months old. The EP should have known that would happen and she was like oh I am sure dd will be fine on School Action Plus, er no! So I asked for an up-to-date SALT assesment to be done and then sent the new report back to panel and dd was statemented pretty soon after that. Thankfully I did as the unit wouldn't even let us look around without a statement! I was very lucky as had all of the pros on my side and all of the reports were written worst case scenario, which was quite upsetting to read.
