Just looking for advice. Daughter is 5, +5 glasses prescription due to partially accommodative esostropia, and ‘non significant’ manifest later nystagmus.

school have concerns over development - social, speech and motor skills.

would the appropriate referral be to a QTVI or would he not meet the threshold? Or someone else maybe?

If DD’s vision impairment is leading to difficulties at school, it can’t hurt to look at a referral to the specialist teaching service, although I suspect DD may not meet the criteria.

Instead or as well, I would look at a referral to community paediatrics and also SALT and OT.

Thank you. It’s hard to know what is leading to a delay, it could be his vision or could be something else - he has 3 autistic siblings, one with dyspraxia.

School want to watch and wait, which I’m not happy with due to how long waiting lists are anyway, but school is known to take the piss when it comes to getting extra help for their children.

In light of your post, further assessment seems wise. In some areas, you can self refer to paeds, SALT and OT (and maybe CAMHS if they undertake ASD assessments in your area). If you can’t, speak to your GP.

In the meantime, the school should be making their best endeavours to meet a DD’s SEN. Have you spoken to the SENCO?

SENco is only in on Mondays and brand new so never met them yet. Teacher wants to wait another couple of terms before any referrals and before doing a IEP.

Request to speak to the SENCO. The school must make their best endeavours to meet DD’s SEN. That isn’t optional.

The class teacher may want to wait before referring, but you can look at whether you can self refer and if not book an appointment with your GP.
