How to find right primary for ASD 5 year old

DS is currently in year 1 at independent primary school. Recent ASD diagnosis has resulted in us being managed out of the school and we're now trying to work out how to find the right state primary for him (or non-mainstream independent, but that is a) not our first choice and b) seemingly more straightforward). EHCP application currently underway...
Any ideas and suggestions on how to determine whether a state primary is the right fit in terms SEN and learning difficulties support would be much appreciated.

Speak to the SENCO and ask direct questions. Support is based on what individual pupils need, but ask what type of support they provide current students. Also ask around locally.

However, without a finalised EHCP (which you may have to appeal, potentially more than once, and the wait for hearings is long) you will be limited to schools with places because of the infant class size limits.

Currently in same position. We've visited multiple mainstream (big and small) and ruled them all out for our DD (3 with an EHCP and full 121). We are still searching but starting to look at bases and special. Our main concerns are that DD is academically able but lacks social skills and has severe anxiety among other needs. I would say visit as many schools , as soon as you can and speak to SENCO's. They tend to be able to answer more questions. they don't usually do the tours but you can ask to speak with them beforehand. More importantly try and picture your DC there, if it feels right you will know.

Thank you both, that’s helpful.

I'm in the same position as well. It is very difficult to know what a school is like until your child is there, in my experience.

How are they managing him out? How horrible...

The EHCNA request needs to be made to the LA you live in. Even if the current school is in another LA or any potential new placement is another.

You can make the request yourself. That way, you know it has been submitted ASAP. You don’t need to use a consultant, advocate, or solicitor. On their website, IPSEA has a model letter you can use.
