What age were you successful with an ECHP?

I really wanted to hear some positive news about others being successful with an ECHP at such a young age of 3. I know LO is ASD and SPD. non verbal. Very behind on development. I really want to make sure support is in place when LO goes to school next year. Struggling quite a lot at nursery at the moment, so I know it would be really hard adjusting to a new setting. What age were you successful with an ECHP?

We applied after ds got his diagnosis when he was 4.3. He was still at nursery and the EHCP was in place before he started school.

DS1 got his in Y1, DS3 in Y2. But I have supported parents secure EHCPs for 2 and 3 year olds. More than 20% of new EHCPs are issued to under 5s.

If DS is starting reception in Sept 2024, you should request an EHCNA ASAP. Many have to appeal more than once and an EHCP may not be in place by September, so make sure you also apply via the normal admission procedures.

Ds4 was in year 3. He has moderate learning disability, hearing loss and various medical conditions

ds5 is currently in year 5 and school are in the process of applying for one for him. He has autism. He is classed as high functioning because he doesn't have a learning disability with it but he has pica and self harms as well.

We got an EHCP for DD age 3, following private dx of asd. She is due to start reception Sept 2024. Classed as "high functioning", verbal (from age 3) but has full 121 in nursery due to anxiety and difficulty with communicating needs. For us it was important to have in place well before school so we could ensure we found her the right school and provisions were in place to meet her needs. Especially if we needed to appeal. (Which is looking more and more likely by the day)

Applied 40 weeks ago. Still no EHCP which is still in draft. He's in reception at a mainstream and is nonverbal, has pica and likely ID and ADHD,so complex needs. They said the will issue final but no specialist places available.

What pisses me off is if they had met their timeframes my son could have got in this year as we know there were places available at schools we visited in July. My local council is notoriously shit though.

We are going to appeal/tribunal and go to the ombudsman too.

If you haven't applied for an EHCP already I would start now.

@CruellasBraVermin have you emailed the Director of Children’s Services threatening Judicial Review?

When you have the right of appeal, do appeal, the majority of appeals are upheld. Don’t bother with mediation, just get the certificate and submit to SENDIST. LAs use mediation as a delaying tactic. If they are going to concede, they will do so whether you actively partake or just get the certificate.

Unless wholly independent being ‘full’ (which isn’t defined in law) is not enough of a reason to refuse to name your preference. The LA has to prove the school is so full admitting DS is incompatible. The bar is higher than many LAs care to admit. It is more than an “adverse effect”, “impact on” or “prejudicial to”. And if the school is not wholly independent, the LA can, and must, name the school regardless of the school’s objections unless the LA can prove one of the exceptions.

I got my son his when he was 3. He had it for the whole final year at nursery. Full time 1:1. x

SachiLars · 28/11/2023 06:10

We got ours in place when he was 4, ready for school applications.

Is Echp the same thing as IDP can someone help me my daughter is 2 she is nonverbal and has difficulties with communication she is displaying Austim traits and as she is getting older her meltdowns and behaviour is so unpredictable and uncontrollable. I’m scared she’s going to hurt herself because she don’t understand instructions given to her. I’m trying my best to get her in a special school she is in nursery and the school are not supporting me they seem to not care I have to constantly ask questions and what I need to do to help my daughter and chase up everything. She is on the waiting list to be seen by the paediatrician. Please can someone give me advise I’m new to this and unsure about everything especially IDP or Echp? There is lack of support out there for undiagnosed children it’s terrible I’m stressed out trying to get support

Support in schools is based on needs, not diagnosis.

An EHCP is for those in England. Whereas, an IDP is for those in Wales. There are some differences between EHCPs and IDPs, but they are both aimed at supporting DC with SEN.
