Moving to the UK and need help with working with LA

Hi - we're moving to the UK from the US and are applying to independent Special Schools for our son. Can anyone advise on how to go about working with our LA to get some reimbursement? We will probably move to Surrey but don't know where exactly. Are all LA's led by the same rules? Is it means tested? Thanks!

LAs in England are all governed by the same law. The system is different in Scotland, Wales and NI.

When you move you can request an EHCNA (an education, health and care needs assessment) from the LA. This is the first step to getting an EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan). On their website, IPSEA has a model letter you can use.

An EHCP is a legal document that sets out a child’s needs, the provision they require and the placement they will attend (including special schools and independent schools where necessary). EHCPs are based on a child’s needs. It is not means tested. But, many parents have to appeal, sometimes more than once.

Some independent special schools allow parents to self fund, but it can be very expensive.
