Hi!
My 4yo, nonverbal, autistic kid has just been approved for his EHCP. Which was a battle in itself despite how obviously he needed it. Anyway now we have the dreaded draft to look at, I am fairly sure they're going to fight us every step of the way (already tried to put us off special ed saying he won't be able to do anything academic there, which is bollocks coz I spoke to them and they have a sixth form where kids have done a levels...) Anyway, I want to make sure we do absolutely everything to get this thing right for him, to have the draft as tight as it can be and all provisions possible laid out. I will fight them to the very end to get this in place. But what I'm looking for is some pointers, some resources, help with exact wording, the kind of stuff that I can ask to be put into it etc. Without knowing what I can ask for I'm worried I might miss opportunities. School (the mainstream he's in nursery at) are awesome and very on board, so I know I'm extremely lucky in that sense, but the LA (North Yorks) really don't have the best rep... So, wording advice, tribunal advice, sites with good guides to drafting, all of it very gratefully received. This mumma is ready to do battle!!!

The most important thing is to ensure the wording in F is detailed, specified and quantified. No woolly or vague wording such as “access to”, “would benefit from”, “opportunities for”, “as required”, “regular”, “such as”, “e.g.”… a woolly EHCP isn’t worth the paper it is written on.

All educational needs should be in B and every need should have corresponding provision in F and outcomes in E.

Provision in F is taken from the reports, so go through those to ensure all the required provision (and needs) are included. You won’t get provision just because you ask for it, you need evidence.

Anything such as SALT and OT that educates or trains must be in F. LA’s often try to put it in G, but it needs to be in F then it is easier to enforce.

IPSEA and SOSSEN have helpful information on their websites. If it is something you would be interested in, SOSSEN has booklets you can buy and a paid for draft checking service.

That's all really helpful, cheers!
