"weak" days?

Ds is 4, had a handful of disabilities with likely a genetic cause behind them, but we haven't found it yet. In a meeting with his teachers recently we discussed how some days he can do way more than others, for example
Day 1: Ds slowly sounding out letters, can't recognise some.
Day 2: Reading three letter words fluently as if he's been doing it for months.
Day 3: Can't recognise 50% of letters, unable to sound out a single word.

We thought it was an interesting, probably tiredness related thing. However they also suggested making a doctor's appointment to discuss his gross motor skills, as they are behind other children. Walking very slowly, unable to climb without crawling, can't jump forward. I of course made the appointment, however after thinking on it and watching him at home for the past week he has the same pattern. Some days he can stand on one leg, hop around and run upstairs. Others he is in slow motion and doing everything the school noticed.

Obviously I'll bring all this up at the doctor's appointment, but does anyone have experience or know what this may be? His dad says that he is "just lazy" some days and the doctors appointment isn't necessary, but surely this level of physical and mental tiredness isn't typical?

An appointment to discuss onwards referral is a good idea.

It’s not uncommon for DC to present differently at different times. Although the degree of difference is on the larger side in your example. As well as tiredness think about other things that can cause differences. For example, the sensory environment can affect how well DC can read. Or, for example, are you comparing like for like with DS hopping and standing on one leg? E.g. is DS wearing (or not) the same footwear, is the ground where DS is hopping level one day but uneven on another day you are comparing to?

I've always noticed this with DS and assumed tiredness/off days etc so will be interesting to hear if you get answers.
I'm doing a reading programme to help my ds along at home for 10 mins a day and how he has been has been so varied. Sometimes it has been on less busy days he has struggled and times I've thought he would be frazzled he's been really engaged. Xx
