Educational Psychologist Assessment for 'fine at school' 6yo

We've finally managed to secure an EHCP Needs Assessment for our dd, who appears 'fine at school'. We've just heard that the EP will see her in school next week, and he wants to speak to us about our views and how we think she can be supported at school.

The trouble is, she's currently going through a really easy, settled, happy phase (which is obviously great!) largely as a result of a really proactive teacher, who seems very clued up (a marked difference to our experience with the senco).

Until now, we've had our experiences at home questioned and have been made to feel like we're making a mountain out of a molehill because she is largely meeting expectations and has no obvious learning difficulties or behavioural difficulties at school. She's a Coke Bottle Effect child and when she's severely emotionally disregulated due to anxiety, we endure clothing/ school refusal, as well as physical and verbal aggression.

We've come a long way, mainly due to self research, learning and sheer bloody mindedness. My concern now though is that I almost feel like as it's currently under control, we won't be able to evidence anything. She's a child who appears not to struggle until she hits a wall and her mental health begins to break down from the effort.

Has anyone in a similar situation had an EP assessment? What will happen? I'm beginning to doubt myself and think perhaps her needs can be met through existing provision. But then I remember how low the lows are, and want to ensure we do everything possible to avoid that happening in future.

A good EP assessment will see masking for what it is and be aware how support and environment can influence how DC presents.

Following with interest. You could have been describing my DS! He is also 6, masking, apparently "fine in school" but Coke bottle effect. I have the same issue with feeling dismissed and feeling that SENCO/teachers have written me off as a neurotic parent.

How did you get the EHCNA, did you apply directly to the LA?

If you feel she's doing well atm maybe you could have a think about the possible reasons why and note down the adjustments that you (as a family) are making as well as anything different DD's teacher is doing that you think helps.

Like you, I struggle to work out what support to ask for from school when I'm not the expert - school is supposed to be! - and when they are telling me they have no concerns about DS 🙄

Do you have a diagnosis yet? If so was it NHS or private?
