HI my son is 2.6 and cannot walk. I know we cant apply for mobility until 3 but can we ask for a bay outside our house before this as parking is getting worse down out street and my son is a lump to carry.

Does anyone know? is it the highway dept of the council I would have to contact?

Hello

Yes it is the highways dept. I really don't know the answer to your question. I have a disabled bay outside my house for my daughter, but they would only give it once she was in receipt of the higher rate mobility allownace.

No harm in giving them a call tho, and see what they say.

good luck

we got one when dd was 2 - she has cerebral palsy - I think cos we had a wheelchair at 2 and not a buggy. They did ask.

I have contacted the Highways dept and they are going to sent me a request form where I will have to plead my case...so we will see

I've been looking in to this and in my area you need to have a Blue Badge before you can apply for a disabled bay - here is the info for my area Bournemouth but your local council should have more info. Do you have a blue badge already? I'm planning to apply as soon as dd is 2 at the end of the month.

how do you go about applying for a blue badge? I just thought that it went hand in hand with mobility DLA componant/

Children under 2 can now apply for a blue badge if needed for heavy equipment ie oxygen cylinder.

Your local council or Social services will have a form to fill in. If your child gets the higher rate Mobility then they are entitled to a Blue Badge. You do need to apply for it though.

In Plymouth you have to fulfill all of the following four points, in order to be able to be considered for a disabled parking bay:

1 - You are the holder of a valid Blue Badge.
2 - You are the driver of the vehicle.
3 - There is a consistent difficulty in finding a parking space near to your home and within your walking range.
4 - You do not have any off road parking.

The website also states:

Disabled driver parking spaces are not provided to:

1 - Husbands, wives, parents, relatives or any named nominated driver of the applicant even if they live at your address and provide transport for you.
2 - To resolve driveway/garage access problems.
3 - To act as ?Keep Clear? areas for visiting vehicles such as taxis or in other cases, where the space would only be used for part of the time.

Which means that although I have 2 children with special needs, the oldest of which is in reciept of higher rate mobility and a blue badge and despite the fact that I live in a street which is known to have parking issues, we are unable to apply for a parking bay outside our house.

Completely ridiculous rules if you ask me, but that kind of sums up the local authorities attitude to all things special needs related in my experience.
