Autism & toileting help

Hello Mumsnetters!

I am a manager of a small nursery in Glasgow. I have worked in the sector for 12+ years and during this tie have support many ASN children, as well as trainings etc

I'm looking for advice on supporting a non-verbal autistic child (male 4years) in going to the toilet.

He goes at home no problem, and just needs help to wipe.
However at nursery, he is having a lot of accidents, and not using the toilet.

Having many discussions with Mum, the support we now have in place;

-Taking him every half hour, and noting down any movements
-Visuals on lanyards of the toilet and sink, for staff to use in aiding him to go
-Using the word for toilet in his home language
-Taking a book with him to distract him as he sits down (Mum says this works at home)

With the above in place, he is still having accidents, often a minute or two after we've taken him and he's been there for a while.

Mum is now going to come in with him every morning and show him our toilets and encourage him to use them, both in English and their home language, and she is also bringing in the same books he sues at home.

I'm just curious if anyone has any other suggestions?

TIA

Is the toilet a single enclosed cubicle? Or is it a cubicle within the toilets? If the latter it is worth trying using the disabled toilet because some DC find the sensory environment in toilets overwhelming &/or distracting.

Some find a reward after using the toilet helps, but others find this actively unhelpful, so speaking to DC’s mum first would be a good idea.
