Part time timetable In Reception Class

Hello, we're pretty new to navigating the various pathways and systems as parents of a child with special needs.
Little one has just turned 4 and started school less than a month after their 4th birthday. We considered deferring entry but were convinced by the school that they would better off resitting Reception class if needed than staying in nursery an extra year.
Little one is awaiting assessment for ADHD and autism, very very impulsive and hyperactive, struggles to focus unless is something they love then the hyperfocus sets in.
Only 3 weeks into term and the school have requested we agree to part time timetable as they are failing to meet their needs, especually in the afternoons when behaviour dips. Has anyone had experience of this and did it help your child?
Just seems to help the school but I cannot see the benefit to my child - looking for experience from others who have been through this. Biggest issue is that my child does not follow instruction (hearing is fine, comprehension fine, they just want everything on their terms). I can't influence this, at home they need lots of prompts and encouragement to do things they don't want to. In school they have fulltime higher needs funding for support, awaiting EHCNA at the moment plus Ed psych assessment and SALT (NHS) input. Also have arranged OT (private) assessment.
Am at a loss ATM. If school can't get them to listen and join in (they are currently not accessing the learning at all) does this mean we need to start thinking about specialist provision options? I am aware places are rare as hens teeth and they would need to be specified in an EHCP, just want to start doing our research if this is the road we need to go down for our child to be supported. We think little one is bright and it's too soon to know if there are learning difficulties, they are counting to 20 fairly consistently and recognise all the letters in the alphabet but speech is unclear with lots of echolalia.

Thanks for reading.

Thank you for your post @ruthietoothie I'm sorry you're in a similar boat. School are continuing to state, and the independent legal advice I got (through work insurance scheme) also said same, that until DC reaches compulsory school age they can insist on part time - the legal advisor said all I could do was go through school complaints procedure. I know this differs from previous advice on the thread - if they're not allowed to do it who do I complain to?
I have made it clear we will look remove DC from school until next September if they insist on part time but I really don't want to do this as it would set us back in terms of applying for the EHCP (nursery had no problem meeting needs with some early years funding support for 1:1 hours).
We have an Ed psych assessment due this week arranged by Early Years to help school better understand how to meet need, this is not the full one for EHCP. Parental application for EHCNA was recorded as received last week so they have until early Nov to decide whether to assess. Since my last post LO has had another incident where he got upset and was not dealt with well (they did not manage the impusivity occurring during emotional upset), and a day where DC didn't even last until lunch before they asked us to collect. I have asked for full details of how they are using the higher needs funding in place for DC as so far it's not proving very effective.
I am pushing for the detail of their plan to help DC access the learning, I've read through their SEND policies and have some questions I expect responses to. We just need to get through until half term.so we can catch a break from it all.
It's making us pretty miserable, fortunately my LO is pretty chirpy and oblivious to it all.

We'll be having a meeting after half term once the school has the EP report and advice from the School Support Partnership, at which point DC's fate will be decided.
Have you checked your school's SEND policies? This is such a frustrating situation and to be honest I still don't know what's best for my child.

Don't tell school you will deregister (even if that’s is what you would do), that may well be what they want. However, it wouldn’t have to set the EHCP back.

If you want DS to attend full time, you don’t have to complain, just refuse to collect. The admissions code is clear DC are entitled to attend full time from the September following their fourth birthday. If you read prh47bridge’s posts on the old thread I linked to, he is a solicitor.

I would look at the possibility of resettling into nursery and deferring a year (even though they have already started). In theory there shouldn't be a problem continuing with ehcp as child will need it for next September so check that out and would take pressure off timescale wise. It's a path I would look at just for well being dc

My 4 year old son started in a asd base in September and still was put on a reduced time table for the last 6 month they actually prompted him to leave after 2 hours with a photo of me and now he won't stay past that time as he's learnt the routine they've taught him, I'm trying my hardest to get him out as I have two other children in the mainstream side and I'm back and forth several times a day to the same school 😅 iv felt like om.losong my mind the past 6 month honestly my little one will not so anything they say now he's even started biting as he just doesn't like it there 😢 completely heartbroke me as this was my best option as I love local single parent don't drive but unfortunately they havnt done what's best for him but just for them selves l. I hope it works out for you just do some research on the school first aa that was my biggest mistake thinking the base would be like the mainstream side which he couldn't of gone I to but he also cannot go I to this unit either some schools just want the funding and some teachers just want an easy day my som sounds exactly the same as your little one 😀

@OpalSwan what support is the school providing? What is in the EHCP and is it being provided? Have you thought about an early review?

If you want DS to attend full time or part time but more than he is, he can. I would try to break the routine of DS thinking he has to come home after 2hrs at the start of a new week.

I know this a old thread my daughter has been part time since September 9-1 is current part time and next week will be 9-2 just say she struggles to transition I feel like part time hasn't really helped her as it's more confusing . She doesn't have a ehcp I feel like she's missing out .

@Teddybear12345678 if you want DD to attend full time, she can. You don’t have to allow the school to continue to unlawfully informally exclude DD.

Has an EHCNA been requested?
