Moderate learning disability and mainstream education

DD5 is currently undergoing a statutory assessment (not England) of SEN. She has suspected ASD and has been referred for the ADOS assessment, speech problems (attends SLT), fine and gross motor issues (been referred to OT).

She has been assessed by the educational psychologist who said based on the cognitive assessment she performed her scores would be indicative of her having a moderate learning disability. She also said developmentally she would put her at less than 3 years of age (DD is 5 this month).
Our goal is to get her a full time 1:1 in the mainstream school she has started which the EP said should be in place after Christmas however she said as part of her statement DD will have in-depth cognitive assessments annually and we may come to a time she cannot cope in mainstream education and we would then need to look into moving her to smaller class specialist provision.

Has anyone with a child with MLD managed to stay in mainstream ed with additional supports in place or should we expect to need to move her to Specialist provision in the future?

My DD8 has no diagnosis of MLD or anything but does score very low on tests used by the Ed psyc who assessed for her EHCP. But she’s autistic and probably ADHD and has DCD and language disorder. She has just moved to a special school in year 4 as mainstream just got harder and harder, there was less and less she could really access and the whole environment was overwhelming. I feel so relieved and hopeful now that she’s moved!! but I would not have predicted I would feel like this when she was 5. I wanted to keep her with her mainstream peers back then.

Thanks for your reply! What year was your daughters EHCP first put in place? Did she received full time 1:1 support? My DD needs significant support and changes to the curriculum according to the Ed psych, I just can’t envisage her managing to stay in mainstream education but I want her to try it first of all with all these extra provisions in place. I naturally want her to succeed in mainstream with her peers but have to be very realistic and think our future may involve specialist education. Has your daughter just started? I hope she’s settling in really well and happy!!
