11yr old DS ADOS assessment

Can anyone share how they’re ADOS assessment went and the outcome?

my 11yr old DS just had his and I feel so sorry for him. They were running around 30 mins late not sure if intentional or not but this made him want to go home as he was sick of waiting. Once in there he did a few tasks and answered a few questions and then after he spoke about school and being bullied he just refused to do anything else.

they were asking different questions and he just kept saying don’t know, don’t know. They said he may have to come back as he wasn’t giving them much engagement.

at the end you could see how stressed he was and wanting to cry.

there were so many points where I wanted to jump in and help him but I knew I wasn’t able to.

he really needs the diagnosis and extra support but I don’t know if they will have got what they needed from today.

I don’t know how to feel tbh. :(

I hope they have enough information. DD2, DS3 and I have all had the ADOS as part of our assessment. We were all diagnosed.

A diagnosis alone won’t necessarily result in additional support. With a few exceptions (e.g. some specialist ASD schools), support is based on needs not diagnosis. What support is DS receiving now and what do you think he needs?

Darklava09 · 22/08/2023 19:13

@OvertakenByLego Yeah me too.

he isn’t receiving anything really his primary has really failed him they were really bad. His cognitive ability comes in at age 6. He’s ok with academics it’s more the SEMH. He struggles with friends, fitting in, anger issues.

in all fairness the diagnosis is just more so for us as parents as we don’t know what we’re dealing with in terms of do we discipline as a child with ASD or not? Like we attempt to discipline as you would typically but we find it’s not effective and often I don’t know what I’m dealing with? If that makes sense.

also, a lot of it is more so for ignorant family members who do not understand his needs and are quite horrible to him and call him rude when he’s in a meltdown as opposed to understanding what he’s dealing with.

it’s hard to put into words.

Have you spoken to the secondary SENCO. You can request an EHCNA yourself. IPSEA has a model letter you can use.

Darklava09 · 22/08/2023 20:26

@OvertakenByLego Yeah they’ve been really good they’re going to use the Ed psych reccomendations and see how he manages for a term or 3. They said that if the things they put into place work then great and if not they will do an EHCP for me. So that’s something

Personally, I would request an EHCNA now.

Darklava09 · 22/08/2023 20:46

@OvertakenByLego Oh ok why do you think that? Sorry just wanting advice really as not sure what to do.

His cognitive ability comes in at age 6. He’s ok with academics it’s more the SEMH. He struggles with friends, fitting in, anger issues.

^^This is why I think an EHCNA needs requesting now. It sounds like DS needs support beyond what can typically be expected at a SEN support level in a secondary MS.

My son (a bit older) just had one too. Apparently it wasn't all fun and games - lots of questions, which I'm sure he answered fully, despite being about difficulties etc. Struggled hugely with one particular task, which autistic people are supposed to be good at - assessor mentioned wanting feedback from psychologist on that, so did unusually badly I presume.
Meanwhile I sat next door answering questions, many of which weren't really applicable.
It will be interesting to see what they make of things. I hope the report is insightful, we could really do with some pointers. School wanted a diagnosis but we gave up on school, so that doesn't really matter too much.

@Anonymouslyikes can I ask you how the ADOS assessment/report went please?

Anonymouslyikes · 03/11/2023 23:27

Not amazingly inspiring. We got a report but it was very basic, just about how he'd engaged in the ADOS. He was given a diagnosis of social communication disorder, which there is very little information about. We were given the names of a few books about anxiety (not really relevant) and some Internet safety blurb.
How about yourself?
