School nursery SENCO for speech

My little boy has turned 3 recently and had his first SALT session with the NHS. He can say quite a few words but doesn't use them functionally, rarely chooses to use words at all tbh. At the appointment it was concluded that he's behind for both expressive and receptive language - this was expected.

He's starting school nursery in September (he's been at home up until now) so the therapist has transferred his care to the school SENCO saying he'll have group speech therapy and possibly further assessments depending on how he is in nursery. Has anyone else had this? Also, anyone else's child gone to nursery and speech has suddenly flourished? I think it's easy for him at home to get what he wants without speaking. Finding it hard to imagine him in this new environment unable to communicate, especially being one of the younger ones anyway.

If you haven’t already, speak to the SENCO. Think about whether you need to request an EHCNA.

We pay for our private SALT to visit school. They are happy to accommodate this and work with them but we found the NHS offer very lacking.

We also paid for a private SALT to go to my son’s nursery. Would have got nowhere with NHS (although this was complicated by catchment areas not matching for home and nursery).
