Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

Can a psychologist do this?

My ds has a diagnosis of asd.
The psychologist has now replaced her diagnostic report with another one, even though she told me the previous one was the final one and not the draft. She also forwarded a copy to my gp. I asked her if it was a final report, she answered that yes for definate.
So I went to see her for some behavioural advice for my ds, she is very good and is ABA specialist, she gave me a replacement report. I went home and compared it with the original. The only change has been, that she has removed her recommendations for education. She recommended that my ds gets full-time 1:1 and special education support in the original report, but took it away in the new report.
Isn't this dodgy?
I know it is linked with statementing.
What shall I do?
Obviously I want to keep the original report. Is my LA allowed to behave like this?
Any answers would be much appreciated, or if this has happened to anyone else, what did you do?
TIA

I would start by asking for a written explanation for why that part has been changed, and that part alone.

similar to twig, but i would suggest writing for a copy of all the personal data she holds on your daughter.

They are definitely playing the statement game and I would do two things at once. First of all, find out the email address of her and the overall Head of Special Needs in the LEA. Send an email to her (or letter, but it has to look formal and typed), querying why the report has changed in just this one detail, and stating (politely) that you have taken informal legal advice and that advice suggests that a Local Authority which uses cost (rather than the child's needs) as the criteria for deciding on appropriate education is at legal fault. By the way it's true that you have taken informal legal advice, as we on Mumsnet are all practically lawyers by now give all we've been through! End up with something nice like - I do look forward to discussing this in more detail, but in the meantime I am mystified as to why this change should have been made and can only assume it is an error.

You need to start playing their game at once, and I have found that a mix of politeness and hints of legal action is the best opening gambit. It worked for me when they started playing similar games.

Good luck!

I bet the LEA told her off for spending their money. It happens here. One psychologist was told to dx severely physically impaired kids with mental impairments too so they'd stay in-county. This county only has a school for learning disabled kids but they have to go over the border if they are bright but physically impaired.
So a whole host of bright kids with cerebral palsy ended up at a school totally not suitable.

Would contact this woman asking why this has been removed. In my view this woman has been "lent on" by the LEA in question to remove the part relating to educational need.

LEA's are not allowed to behave like this at all but many of them flout the law.

I would contact IPSEA on Monday morning to see what they also suggest particularly if you are currently going throught the whole statementing minefield.

that's horrible nmc. surely its discrimination?

TheodoresMummy · 23/02/2008 20:09

Have seen it recommended on MN before to get in touch with your MP if you are having any trouble with the LEA or indeed healthcare profs.

Don't know if that may be of any use in your situation.

TheodoresMummy · 23/02/2008 20:10

I mean if you don't get any joy from contacting the Profs directly.

oh yes, been here before myself.

ds,s original psych was all set to recommend that ds be statemented, she even said so in front of the lea at a multi discliplinary meeting.

next thing im being told that ds isnt having his AS dx,d and that we need to do a "parenting course"

so i told her to eff off and got a private psych on board.

someone who i know who is privy to my lea told me off the record that the lea had written to the psych,s boss and gone mad saying how dare she recommend provision.

i also wrote to the psych,s boss and asked for ALL medical reports, copies of everything and asked for an explanation of why ds couldnt have his dx of AS based on the ADOS, (they had blamed him getting a high score on not meeting the criteria)

she backtracked immediately, blaming the first psych, we eventually got the dx although they said PDD, the psych,s boss recommended he go to the independent school and he got in.

the private psych phoned the nhs psych to ask why they said PDD and Not AS when he knew full well ds IS AS and she told him she had been prevented from doing so as AS means more provision.

it stinks it really doews, the only way to get what your child deserves is to fight them at their own game, as someone else said get your mp,ipsea or whoever on board and kick off big style.
