High score on ASQ:SE 2 help where/what to do now?

I’ve posted in behaviour/development but been advised to try here instead.

Per the title, DS is 2 weeks off of being 3. I've had some concerns regarding his behaviour. I reached out to the HV who said I needed to speak with the "nursery stages behaviour team" and they'd contact me in a week. In the mean time I was told to use the text services and that was as helpful as a chocolate teapot in the Sahara desert. They seemed to have no clue, she didn't know who the CDC was, she told me to "just ignore" when he's launching things down the stairs or slapping his brother, she said to "just give him a snack whenever he starts" and as soon as she found out DS2 was awaiting his CAMHs assessment she immediately washed her hands of it.

When the "behaviour team" finally contacted me a month later she again was useless, I was told as I'd made a self assessment to Portage she'd call me back the following Monday so she'd have a clear picture and surprise surprise this was 2 weeks ago and hasn't happened.

Portage have agreed it's not "typical terrible 2's/Threenager" behaviour and he's been accepted on their waiting list but you're talking at least 12-18+ months.

I've just filled in the ASQ:SE-2 36 month questionnaire and he scored 175. The cut off for referral is 105. The highest being on page 3 with 65.

Any ASD/ADHD etc referrals have to be made through CAMHs who won't let you refer them till 5 and over. Community Paediatrics will only see them if there’s something “physically” wrong like cystic fibrosis, cerebral palsy etc So I'm at a loss with what exactly am I suppose to do or where i'm suppose to turn. I had a long 6 year battle with DS2 to get his referral and I don't know If I can do it again

Is he at nursery yet? Does your area have an early help team that you can apply for?

If you Google your LA and local offer you will see what support is available in your area. There are often charities that can help and provide support.

Have you spoken to the GP and taken in the ASQ results? The 5 years thing sounds quite dodgy, are they allowed to have blanket policies like that?

I have spoken to my GP regarding DS2 and they were useless. Very much have a “as long as he’s happy” mentality. I have a phone call appointment with them on Friday so I will try them again with this though.

Apparently they can but even at 5 they’re reluctant to help. Twice I was told due to DS2 not being suicidal they wouldn’t help him

There will be someone you can be referred to for developmental concerns under 5. Even if it isn’t local you can request to go elsewhere.

Home Start may be able to support you. Not with specialist advice, but with support. Scope offer mentoring to parents of DC awaiting assessment - you could pursue this on the basis of DS2. You could also request social care assessments.

If DS was in nursery I would have suggested the nursery ask for advice from the Area SENCO, and you potentially consider requesting an EHCNA. You could still request an EHCNA, but if you make your own arrangements by EHEing the LA won’t be obliged to provide the support in an EHCP.

Speak to your HV and ask them to carry out an SE. I maybe wouldn’t mention you’ve already done one. You can be referred to community paeds and the HV would be the best person to do this. Is he speaking? SALT referral might also be needed.

Even if DS was to go to nursery he wouldn’t be of age anyway due to his age. Our LA does do EHCP for those whom are EHE my other Ds has one that’s updated yearly

I had a meeting with my HV at the beginning of the month, she knows I carried one out and she agrees there’s something there. I also had a meeting with Portage who have put him on their waiting list but that can be over a year. So in the meantime you’re in limbo.

Community Paediatric have no involvement with children unless there’s a physical reason (cerebral palsy, brain damage, chromosomal etc) for their additional needs and will tell you the school/you/the GP need to make referrals. I went down that option with DS2 they did bloods, he had no issues there, they discharged him back to the school/gp to refer and he’s never seen anyone since.

I didn’t say EHE DC couldn’t have EHCPs. EHE DC may have EHCPs (and of course they should have ARs, they are a statutory require, ent), but, what I posted was, by EHEing parents relieve the LA of the duty to provide the provision in it. In a minuscule minority of cases LAs provide a PB for those EHE’ing, but that isn’t the norm and is mostly nowhere near enough to cover all the provision reasonably required.

I’m not sure what you mean by “wouldn’t be of age”? Going to nursery, input from the Area SENCO and EHCNAs can all happen for 3 year olds (which presumably DS is now since your OP was written more than 2 weeks ago). In fact they can all happen for 2 years, too.

There will be somewhere you can be referred to for developmental concerns in under 5s, even if it is out of area.
