ADHD meds

DS who is 7 was recently diagnosed with ADHD - inattentive type (with hyperactive and impulsive traits) and last week was started on 5mg medikinet. We mainly opted for medication for school as he’s very distractible and a bit disruptive but he is a bit of a handful at home too. He’s had it for a week now and we haven’t heard anything from school formally yet but he came home with star of the week which feels positive. Oddly though, there also seems an improvement in the after school period/evenings. This seems odd as surely the meds have worn off by this point (they supposedly slow release over 8 hours). But he’s definitely more focused. After school he spent an hour playing happily with his Lego and just now, after I’d asked him to go and use the loo, clean his teeth and head to bed etc… he… well he just did it….!

Because it’s a low dose and worn off by after school evening I’m wondering whether it’s a placebo thing and I’m noticing good things that weren’t there previously. I really don’t think I am though. He’s never followed instructions like that before. Usually you have to re-focus and prompt at every step. So I’m wondering whether after school what we usually see (just wanting to zone out in front of a screen, really struggling to listen/follow instructions, bit stubborn) was in part down to him being exhausted from doing his best to mask all day at school. Or am I in some kind of honeymoon period where all is rosy.

Anyone else experienced this. Feels a bit too good to be true.

This is exactly what’s happening with DS
hes pretty perfectly behaved till 8pm bedtime but I don’t think he’s good enough for school expectations after 3pm if that makes sense

we have absolutely no rebound in the evening but next morning he is a bit of a mess … 🙄

Hi I have a 7 year old girl with inattentive ADD and awaiting ASD assessment. She is falling so far behind at school.

I have just started her on Equasym XL 10 mg

On Monday she was tired and fell asleep on the sofa after lunch, reduced appetite

Tuesday tired but not as tired, a headache, improved appetite

Wednesday and Thursday no symptoms (grumpy about 4ish but she is always like that)

She didn't have any meds on Friday and today....I've just noticed that she's back to chewing...always something in her mouth 🙈....I completely forgot about that, it's a sensory thing...she said she didn't need to chew on the medication so that's an interesting start

I'm just wondering about others experiences of this, I really want her to catch up at school, she's aware she is behind and it isn't doing her self esteem any good. It's the school holidays so good to begin trialing this 🤗
