It finally happened, 5yo ASD-NVC threw a glass at the TV and it smashed the screen.

Just had to tell some people who might understand what it’s like having things constantly smashed to pieces.

Hi, i totally understand what it's like my son also has asd and suspected adhd and he gets so over stimulated some times no matter how many Sensory time he has throughout the day he ended up throwing a toy brush at my TV last year and it totally broke, now I tend to keep hard toys upstairs only teddy's and Sensory toys downstairs now, my son has calmed down alot being destructive since he gotten into a sen school which caters to his needs much better than the mainstream one, I found his behaviour improve not massively but a little, I understand it can be hard sometimes though x

Sorry to hear this OP. Do you get DLA?

Scratchybaby · 09/05/2023 08:34

It's happened to us too! DS threw a toy truck at the TV when getting worked up about an episode of Hey Duggee. DH was not pleased!!!

SachiLars · 09/05/2023 18:50

@alltheevennumbers we get DLA. In fact we are waiting to see if we’ll get anymore for mobility since her turned 5.

Me too. Thomas tank engine die cast obliterated our tv screen one Christmas too.

I’ve been there OP. It’s really shit and I know you’re likely just wanting to know you aren’t alone rather than seeking advice. But just thought I’d add that DS has mostly stopped this recently, it was trial and error to redirect that energy into something that was ‘okay’ to throw.

Of all the things we tried, we bought those blow up frog balloon things from flying tiger; if you throw them really hard they stick to the ceiling and can’t damage anything. We try to have them accessible in the living room to protect the TV 😁

ThomasWasTortured · 10/05/2023 17:25

Have you tried one of the enclosures/protectors to protect the TV?

SachiLars · 10/05/2023 18:27

We got some sensory bean bags for him to throw, but not as satisfying as a glass! Bit worried that anything sticky would get chewed but thanks for the idea.

@ThomasWasTortured I haven’t seen one of those before. I’ll have a look. Thanks.

Feel for you OP, and been there too.

My DD has learned to resist that impulse now, although she still throws things, and clears table tops during difficult moments.

Top tip ... buy a second hand TV to replace it .... we bought a new TV after DD smashed it, and a few months later she did it again ... it was not a good feeling. You can often find cheap TVs secondhand on FB Marketplace.
