I took Ellie 9age 3) to have her feet measured today.

As we left she turned to the lady and said "bye bye" then said "thank you" but she signed thank you at the same time as saying it.

(for those of you that don't know, the sign for thank you is putting your hand to your mouth and bringing it away, something like that anyway!!)

The lady was escstatic and said "arrrh, arrrh, look, she's blowing me kisses"!!!!

I didn't have the heart to tell her it was sign language, if it made her happy..........

It made me laugh and I can't wait to tell her teachers at School!!!!

cute annie- when you think about it the sign does resemble a kiss being blown doesn't it Smile

I always have a laugh with the parents that I help to get started with signing as a lot of them feel that the 'toilet' sign looks like you're giving someone the finger!!

(One of my colleagues went on a sex aducation Makaton training course and we had a riot doing all the naughty signs in the office-very silly I know but us salts can't be sensible the WHOLE time!)

That toilet sign's been changed because of that (whcih I was told is why it was that finger). I can't change now and I can't remember quite what you do for the new one.
Cute blowing kisses story!

that is something that I found surprising - in the dark ages back when I was in uni I did some prac work with people with special needs ( here in Australia) and a lot of them were non verbal HOWEVER I quickly learned the toilet sign!!

When we started using makaton with dd1 in the UK I was surprised to see in the makaton book that the toilet sign did in fact resemble giving someone the finger. Figured I would use the aussie version - simply putting index finger into palm in the shape of a t - kinda like the time out sign or the 't' of sign language.

In fact there are a few signs that are different - like - 'more' we had to reteach dd1 that sign and do it differently as no one here knew what she was saying.

annie - my dd does do kisses as her thank you....Smile she starts with the general idea of a sign and we have to refine it.... not quite refined the thank you yet!

DingleAlltheWay · 09/12/2004 16:02

Aaah how sweet anniebear.Smile We often bring a smile to the lollipop lady's face. Every time we cross the road I prompt the children into saying thank you. DD signs but has recently started saying " ooouu". I wonder how long it will be before she manages the Thank y.. bit!Grin
I never made the connection between the toilet sign!Blushmust be my sweet & innocent mind!Grin We use the signalong version, middle finger brushing supporting side of chest, is that the same???

Bless!

It makes me laugh when we're out in a bar and I sign 'drink' to D if I'm going to the bar! Our sign for drink is a like the one for milk but onehanded.

Lottie and I use the old toilet sign, but don't use that finger, not aware of a new sign.

mizmiz · 10/12/2004 18:44

Yes it is Dingle.
You must be pure because as soon as I demonstrate it to anyone they start sniggering!!
