To ask how my son with ASD will progress

I know none of you can tell me that but wondering if others can share their experiences etc. My lovely little guy is nearly 4 and is in the process of being assessed for ASD. He's made lots of progress in the past year or two, he was completely non verbal with no communication skills whatsoever and he now has hundreds of labelling words/phrases, he knows his colours, the alphabet, he can count to 20. Most importantly in the past few months he has learnt to use language in a functional way and can now tell me what he wants verbally using single words which really has changed my life. So nice that he can now point at his cup and say water rather than screaming and crying and me having to figure out what he wanted. However he's still massively behind his peers. His understanding and obviously his speech is massively delayed and he isn't interested in interacting with other kids. He lives in his own happy little land where the only important people are me and his sister. He's such a lovely happy little boy though, loves pirates and cars and does imaginative play with them. Loves dinosaurs too! He sleeps well. He's happy. His main struggles are with speech and language and anxiety around certain situations like haircuts. He is also not toilet trained yet. We've recently moved up to Scotland and he's in a new nursery now and they're really great with him and he's taken it all in his stride. He's going to be held back a year before starting P1. Does anyone have experience of a child like my gorgeous boy? I cannot put in to words how much I worry for him. Thank you xx

Hi there, I am in a similar position, only my son who has just turned 4 received his official diagnosis today. I am actually heartbroken. Like you, he has made great progress over the last few months with his communication, can request, and knows his numbers and abc's, although some of his speech is still unclear. Has good concentration and focus. Sleeps well at night. He is potty trained. I am deferring his school start until 2024. He has sensory issues, particularly with tactile (sticky, messy textures) We have started private OT so hoping that may help him esp before he starts school. I am so worried for him and what the future will hold. I am really praying he will be okay and happy. I would be still hopeful for mainstream. Would love to hear some positive stories.
