We had our first meeting with DS teacher today. She said he has problems with repeatative play and speech and does not seem able to relate to the other kids, he finds it difficult to focus on things he is not interested in. He is now going to be referred to an Ed Psych. Can anyone tell me where things go from here. Obviously she is going to assess him and will probably want to talk to us as well. What happens after that? Is it usual that she will assess him by herself without me or DH there? Should I take him to my GP as well and ask for a referral from him also? The school do seem very proactive but I dont want this to just be 'happening' to us IYSWIM. I want to be fully involved every step of the way and I need to know how it is all done to be able to do that. I have also posted this in SEN. I would be really grateful for any thoughts or information. Thank you.

May I ask how old your son is?.

The EP can make recommendations re his educational needs but cannot make any formal medical diagnosis. The EP can observe in class and will likely talk with you after the assessment. Am glad to read that the school are currently being proactive but this is not always the case.

For a formal diagnosis you need to ask your GP to refer you to a developmental paediatrician at a child development centre. Don't wait on the school to do this as it'll take forever, you need to get the ball rolling on that asap.

Others will hopefully be able to advise you as well.

I wish you and your family well
