Asperger’s Symptoms

DS is 12. I’ve been wondering for a few years whether he may have high functioning Asperger’s, I understand it’s a spectrum and and different people are affected differently. Probably easiest if I list the reasons why I think this.

Poor emotional regulation, frequent tantrums although nowadays more storming off
Quite rigid in movements and the way he sounds when he speaks
Painfully shy especially around adults. He didn’t speak for the first year at school
Rarely makes eye contact unless he knows someone well
Doesn’t really ‘get’ banter and says inappropriate or annoying rhings
Much better with number than anything that requires interpretation or thinking outside the box
Very fussy with food and always has been
Cannot cope with being told what to do
Gets obsessive with things
Doesn’t seem to have much ‘depth’ in terms of empathy or really getting other people and why they behave in certain ways.
Doesn’t understand chit chat and gets annoyed

I realise this all sounds quite negative. He has a lot of friends and other kids generally like him. He can also tell lies quite fluently which I’ve been told children with Asperger’s probably wouldn’t do.

I really don’t know a lot about it other than what I’ve read online so any advice would be appreciated.

Tia

It certainly sounds like ASD (Asperger Syndrome is now encompassed under the umbrella of ASD) is a possibility and a referral for assessment would be beneficial.

Not being able to lie is somewhat of a stereotype and doesn’t apply to all. Being popular and having friends doesn’t rule it out either.

Thank you for your reply, it’s a lot quieter than I expected on this board! Would I ask for a referral via the school? Is there generally a long waiting list? Thanks again

The SN boards are quieter and it takes longer to get replies, but you generally get more targeted responses than on the main boards.

In some areas you can self refer. If you can’t ask the GP or school. There will be a fairly long waiting list, the length varies area to area.
