ds is in year 7, he is autistic amongst other conditions and has an EHCP. He is mainstream but thinking of moving him to a Sen school. He doesn’t have any major behavioural issues at school and copes relatively well in a mainstream environment but struggling in lessons.

quite a few years behind academically and will likely not be able to GCSE’s. He will also not grasp exams or how to act appropriately in them. It is very unlikely he’ll do them, the senco has said he will not be able to buy has not said what will happen instead. He did not do SATS either.

lack of spaces in Sen schools around my county and it will be a fight to move him. My La will do everything possible to keep children in mainstream schools.

Can mainstream schools offer alternatives to GCSE’s?

MS can offer alternatives to GCSEs e.g. functional skills or BTECs, although some alternatives still involve an exam of some sort, but access arrangements can be put in place for them. If DS will be working below the level of GCSEs have a look at entry level qualifications.
