I still want it in writing but the Head of SEN met with me today and confirmed that they will offer 32.5 hours of support (the whole school day) plus half-termly autism outreach from the specialist autism school and weekly support from a specialist teacher!

I was over the moon with that, but even more so when he offered me a place on the LEA SEN decisions/ strategy group.

I'd been feeling kind of selfish for accepting not going to Tribunal, because a new law was passed in November (I think I saw it on the IPSEA website) where Tribunal decisions don't just count for that particular child, but also any other similar cases where the LEA have made the same wrong decision. So one good decision for my son could have helped other parents/ children, and I bet that's partly why my LEA were crapping it!

So I said yes to being on this group because that way I can hopefully help them to make decisions which are actually fair and helpful to people in the same decision that I've been in. He said, "we want to learn lessons from what's happened in your case" and I do actually believe they might want to not get so much grief from parents like me!

He said "oooh, but the ADOS score made us realise why he needs full time support because he's obviously got really severe autism" and I said "yes, but it's not about a label or a diagnosis as some children wait ages to be diagnosed; it should be about needs and my son has had the same needs and behaviours for his whole life - a label only explains them - and it shouldn't have taken 3 years and a mountain of paperwork for the LEA to recognise his needs, just like it shouldn't have taken an MP letter and Tribunal application to get the Statement in the first place and now again to get the 23 hours raised."

He didn't argue!

And what I didn't challenge was the severe autism bit, because I'd got quite het up at his review the other day because I didn't like this idea that he has severe autism just based on the ADOS, as he's so verbal, so, well, high-functioning, which is why it's been so well masked (also by the ADHD) for all these years that he's actually autistic. I asked the CAMHS psychiatrist at the review what his 'label' was, and she said it's not an exact science - he has autism or Autistic Spectrum Disorder - but wouldn't be tied down to severe or not, just saying the score indicated severe difficulties, but his high intelligence and excellent language compensate for these to some degree.

Later she took me aside and said I shouldn't try to discount the LEA's view that the ADOS = severe autism as it will make them feel better about allocating so many resources!

So I shut up then.

So for once, happy me! I just need to sort out the DLA appeal now and then I will feel .

But even if I don't get the DLA sorted and I don't get the extra money, I've won the Social Services battle and now the most important one: the support for J, and that extra support for him is what's really important.

Thanks to those of you who've offered advice and support through all of this, espcially about writing to the MP because that seems to have really helped!

Looking forward to not having to go to Tribunal - I really might have gone under if I'd have had to do that.

Well done!

Peachy - it may well be the same. I just don't know. I thought it was a bit too good to be true that they'd given him full time 1:1 when they know he's doing his ABA programme at home in the afternoons for at least two more terms. I think the school were rubbing their hands , thinking of all the lovely training they could send her on in the afternoons (and I was hoping some of that could be at our house [grin}. School are questioning it next week so should know soon. Altho it's a great school i really don't know how it's going to work out for DS2. But if it doesn't, the special school say they'll have him back - and ironically, his class has just taken in two new children, both verbal and very sociable, who would be great role models for him.

It probably is the same, you know what LEA's are like.

Can't wait for ds3's review now- we've been warning everyone, they wouldn't listen, but ds3 has lost pretty much all his accrued langauage again in the last few days. Seem to be back to single words, and then not many of thsoe. Damnations!

Your LEA likes to do things informally doesn't it? A friend got offered 1-1 for her daughter IF she didn't apply for a statement (told her to be wary but she went ahead, although i think that child more traumtised by some sad things she had seen- domestic violence case- then SN). Daughter seems to be doing OK at school though, more because she's ut of home environment i think.

fabulous news.

Welld on Givemesleep. Am so pleased for you. Im away with DS at the minut as its half term so im staying at sisters but DH says final statement has arrived but says 32 hours isnt mentioned which has got me a little worried BUT im hoping its just cos Dh hasnt looked at it properly!!!!!

Well done for everything! Im so glad you are going to continue to help others! CONGRATS!!!!!

daisy5678 · 13/02/2008 23:38

We got the (ten billionth) proposed amended statement in the post today - 32.5 hours and even the little sentence I threw in at the last minute has remained (almost) unchanged: "staff working with J should have experience of and training in autism and ADHD as well as restraint training"...(guess which word got changed? The 'must' changed to 'should')!

I know it's not specific about which training and how much of it, and I know it should say 'must', but I might do him out of anyone at all in future if I insist on the 'must' - none of his BSAs have been that description, but all but 2 (of the 8 so far!) were amazing. I just want to have the reason for quizzing Headteachers on past experience of the people they hire to work with J.

So I guess I will write to the Tribunal tomorrow and withdraw the appeal! Yay.

Bonkerz: did you find the bit in your statement? And how did dx thing go - have you got any further?

am so pleased for you givemesleep. Well done!!!! Maybe you can now have some time of rest befoe the next battle!!!!

My statement does state 31.5 hours so am pleased with that. Still no news from CAMHS or psych about diagnosis and im leavung it this week so i can delibaraely shout about lack of contact next week IYKWIM. If noting in post by mday im goingtorn and TELL psych i will be in to see him tues!!!! Then i will call into CAHMS and demand to see DSs file.

daisy5678 · 14/02/2008 12:06

Great about the hours. I guess the good thing is that there must be a dx of some sort, which I know is what you wanted, or else they wouldn't be wanting someone to talk you through it, if that makes sense. If there were no problems identified, they would just get any old person to talk it through with you.

I know that we had to wait almost two weeks to get our ADOS results, and even then it was just a score (from the psychiatrist) until ten days later when the person who'd written the ADOS report went through it with me.

I know it's frustrating, but would be more frustrating if they just gave you a dx over the phone with no real explanations, cos even when you want a dx and know what the dx will most probably be, like I did, it's still really hard when you get it confirmed, so they have to do it properly. Just really hard to wait, I know.

That's great news!

daisy5678 · 14/02/2008 15:36

Thanks!

Just had a really good OT session too - they've suggested lending us a weighted blanket and vest to see if it helps with the hyperness - seems like it's all coming together for once...what's about to go wrong??? (Sorry, but experience has made me cynical!)

Thats great givemesleepGood luck with the DLA appeal.

I've just a had meeting with my LEA and asked then to include in part 3 of his statement that all TA's that work with ds need to have training in ASD and ADHD and also restraint training. She initially said that as he doesn't have a dx they couldn't add it in but when i said that his paed had written a letter saying that we should treat ds as though he has AS she said they could add it in after all

Good news about your hours too Bonkerz

bonkerz · 15/02/2008 16:39

I know the waiting is probably a good sign its just very frustrating.

daisy5678 · 15/02/2008 18:40

Hey dustystar - that is good. I can't stand it when they go all 'computer says no' without a dx.
