Hello all. Looking for some reassurance/advice
My son is 9 years old and being assessed for autism and adhd, almost at end stage of assessments so diagnosis will be soon.
He's been threatening to harm himself with a knife when he's having a meltdown. Last week before school he threatened to use one in school to harm himself so ofc I had to speak to his teacher. Fast forward today, I had a phone call from social services to ask about the incident and if I have or need any support. I'm wondering if school had to report the incident or they are Concerned I'm not parenting/coping well. I feel sick that I've been reported. I'm just trying my hardest and feel judged by them :(

I am sure they are just following their safeguarding procedure. I expect that ss will have a chat with you and that’s all. It’s understandably worrying but maybe they can help ensure you and your ds get support.

Has he been referred to CAMHS?

Has he been referred to CAMHS?

Ss called today and asked if I was getting any support and how I'm coping. I'm coping fine and told her this. I mentioned that I'd be interested in a parenting course to understand more about adhd and autism so she referred me for that. That was all, that was the end of the conversation. I just hope school don't think I can't cope with his behaviour because I can, it's just the threatening of the knife is concerning

Sorry, I obviously didn’t read all of the post properly, waiting for my ds to go to sleep!

Have you had a meeting with school to discuss it?

It must be heartbreaking to see your ds struggling so much Flowers

Oh that's OK, my ds takes forever to fall asleep! He loves to chat instead of sleep lol.
And I haven't had the opportunity to speak to school yet as I received the call from ss after school hours today. It absolutely breaks my heart to see him so distraught and struggling with his emotions at times, we try our best to makes life as easy as possible for him. He's such a happy boy most of the time and always has been happy its just he's extremely defiant and doesn't like being told no so he could go crazy over simply being told no and that is hard. I really feel like the school judge me sometimes, rather than ask if I'm OK and coping they resort to reporting to social services. But like you said, it could just be procedure and I really hope that it is! No parent wants a social services report, it makes me feel sick :(

OP, the school will have had to report any concerns. You could request a social care assessment from the disabled children’s team and a carer’s assessment for you.

@Vicker80 You would be better starting your own thread. Whether you can get a NHS ASD assessment without CAMHS involvement will depend on the area. In some it’s CAMHS that assess, in others it’s community paeds. Of course, there’s the private route too. There’s no such thing a a “trace of autism”. People either have autism or they don’t.

If DD has a statement then MH support can be included in there, then if the NHS can’t or won’t provide it the LA must commission independent provision.
