Low set ears

My little one is delayed with speech and a few other things, and I’ve noticed that they have very low set ears and wide teeth/flat nose. Is this a concern? Would a GP flag to me or shouldn’t a HV if they thought there was an issue? I’m not sure if I’m being paranoid but alongside all the other delays I just don’t know

I would speak to your GP about it, I guess your lo's features could suggest a genetic syndrome which could also explain their delay. I would definitely want it looked into further.

Will a GP know about this? I feel a bit like it’s hit and miss if you get one who knows about this area

Potentially no as there are so many genetic conditions. My son has 22q deletion and I've not met many health professionals who know much about it or would recognise it. (We got lucky by seeing a speech therapist by chance with a specialist interest in 22q!) It would be really useful to be referred to genetics at your local hospital so they can evaluate and do blood tests if they think it's needed.

Thank you for this. I suppose part of me doesn’t really want to know/push for it. I am hoping in a way if it’s so obvious someone will come notice. I’m just exhausted with the day to day and don’t know any more what is going on, if DC will simply catch up one day and be fine or if it’s something else.

@Worriedwi I totally understand that. It's up to you if you feel a diagnosis would help him and you. My son's has helped me to understand him better. I do feel I have had to push for so much of his support as he doesn't have obvious physical needs, so having a blood test that says 'yes there is something going on' helps.

If it is a chromosome issue, do you know if I have another baby is they are more likely to have the same?

@Worriedwi it depends I think on the condition. Some conditions are inherited, some are random (like my son's), I know some you can be a carrier of certain genes.

Sounds like it could be a genetic syndrome. My little boy (3) has low set ears as one of the traits of the genetic syndrome he has.
To answer your question about other children, not necessarily unless you/partner are carriers. For example my sons is de novo (so completely random!) therefore no reason another child I had would have the same thing xx
