I think hyperlexia is textual reading without (much) understanding but i could be wrong, Some ASD children can do this

Hyperlexia can be a stand-alone dx or it can be part of another SN. Ds1 has a dx of ASD but also has strong traits of hyperlexia. He would randomly read out words that interested him at 2+ but couldn't understand even very basic English and didn't talk until he was around 3yrs old.

Thanks, think it may be hyperlexia after all!!

My DS has hyperlexia and HFA. The criteria for hyperlexia are:

  1. Extremely early reading
  2. Delayed speech
  3. Social communication problems

A hyperlexic child learns English in the way an adult learns a foreign language. When you put it that way, the notion of being able to read before you can talk doesn't sound so bizarre - there are plenty of people who can understand e.g. written French but wouldn't be able to carry on a conversation with native speakers.
