Ds with autism refusing to leave the house

Hi everyone. I'm 24 and my DS is 3. He has autism and often frequently refuses to leave the house unless my gran is giving us a lift anywhere.

My little ones 3 year immunisations are tomorrow and I'm really worried now as my gran has had to cancel taking us to the doctor's surgery due to her own ill health.

My main worry is that I won't be able to make it round to the doctor's because his meltdowns are so bad I really don't like forcing him too out of his comfort zone. I really don't know if I should just reschedule the appointment or not. Would I be a bad mum doing this?

Sorry if this seems like a silly question I am just a bit anxious about it.

Any help appreciated many thanks

Try it. If it goes wrong ring the surgery. They should be aware of his diagnosis and place it firmly in the category of disability access and don’t let them fob you off as a bad / lazy mum.

I would still go. DS1 hates leaving the house but there are some non-negotiables and medical appointments are one of them.

However, there are things you can look at to make it easier for DS. For example, do you have a buggy? A weighted blanket for DS’s lap or a normal blanket DS can cover himself with to hide from the world. Ear defenders. Would getting a taxi be possible.

With DS1 we also find not leaving the house exacerbates the problem as leaving the house in future becomes harder and harder if it falls out of his routine.

If he can't cope don't force him. Immunisations can be done at home if necessary. You just need to present a strong case to the surgery. Does he have an EHCP?
