At what age should we consider ADHD/ADD?

My DS is currently 5 and in year 1. We just had parents evening before half term and the feedback was that he’s very bright but his lack of attention/focus is a problem and he’s constantly needing to be reminded and prompted to listen/stay on task. This has been brought up as the main focus of parents meetings from his school nursery onwards.

We see the same outside of school at his sports clubs, he’s notably worse than most other kids there in most groups.

In neither setting is he purposely distracting others, he just daydreams, fidgets etc. He genuinely believes he’s trying really hard to listen.

Up until now, we’ve been very happy to go with the “summer born boy” narrative and assumed he’d catch up naturally as he grew older. More recently I’ve been wondering if ADD might be in play here, and a trusted friend also suggested this (without any prompting from me).

All the information I can find lists the symptoms which seem to fit, but I can’t see much on the practical side - nowhere can I find information on what age might be appropriate to start looking further into this and make a push for an assessment. I’ve heard from so many parents that a late diagnosis is a huge regret, but also don’t want to single my son out if he really is “just young”.

Any replies to my stressed out waffle appreciated!

No advice but joining as we’re in a very similar place - it’s confusing to know where to start.
