Has anyone medicated their DC's ADHD for social reasons?
My 8 year old DS is extremely bright and academic, he is working 1 - 2 years ahead of his peers in all areas at school. He has a diagnosis of ASD and ADHD. So far we have refused medication.
However, the issues with his ADHD are becoming more severe. He is still flying academically, but he really struggles with listening and attention. For instance, he needs to be told instructions multiple times, and in the end the only way to make him listen is to be very firm and telling him off, which is obviously very tricky for him. Also, even when you are very firm, he only seems able to suppress (mask?) his behaviour for a matter of minutes. It's also meant he has been in dangerous situations, such as on a school trip where he tried to run across a car park and they said he was very difficult to control. I'm also finding this increasingly an issue where he runs off, talks to strangers or isn't aware of dangers around him. I also think his ADHD may be alienating him from his peers, as he tends to be very silly, hyperactive, squealing in their faces, generally being crazy and very intense. Although this was tolerated when he was younger, his peers are being less and less accepting of his behaviour. School has also agreed that his behaviour is beginning to alienate him from his peers.
Has anyone medicated for ADHD for the above reasons and had positive results? His ADHD, in a lot of ways, masks a lot of his autistic traits. It's really tricky to know what the right thing to do is, especially with his ASD diagnosis.
