My son is almost 3.5 and in his fourth week of nursery. Upon pick up today the nursery teacher has told us it’s evident that he will need some sort of 1:1 support as he’s not really picking up on their routine and is basically on a solo mission all morning there (he goes mon-fri for 3 hours).

I have seen the word EHCP floating about during my endless google searches and wondered how do I start this process? Nursery have said they can help but didn’t really elaborate. My son basically has really delayed receptive and expressive language, it is very obvious he will be diagnosed with ASD once his referral to the developmental paediatrician comes through. He is also under SALT but has only had one session in 4 months.

He pretty much has next to no understanding at all, he isn’t non verbal, he talks loads, it’s just only repetitive things (counting, shapes, animals, nursery rhymes etc) he can copy things you say and do and understands some basic instructions but really, really not a lot at all. It worries me for him and I’d like to get the ball rolling in terms of support as quickly as possible.

You can ask for an EHCNA yourself - IPSEA have a mode letter you can send to the LA on their website. It’s worth looking at IPSEA and SOSSEN’s websites if you haven’t already, there is lots of helpful information on them.

In the meantime the nursery can apply for early years inclusion funding if they need more funding to meet DS’s needs.
