sensory cushion

As you all know dd has add and finds it hard to sit still for long periods of time due to this (although is improving). I was wondering if anyone knew anything about wobbly/sensory cushions which a friend of mine mentioned were very good for helping with sitting.
Dd could probably do with seeing OT but there is an 18 month waiting list that has closed. Get this, there is now a waiting list for the closed waiting list - madness. So I will not getto see anyone until 2008 so can't go down that route.
Any suggestions/advice gratefully received!

BH - a wait until 2008 is unacceptable !

I picked up a load of stuff at the SEN fair a couple of weeks ago about equipment. I'll sort through and see if I can find anything.

Also I would try fledlings (www.fledglings.co.uk?) - they are really helpful and source stuff for SN.

clairabelle · 28/11/2004 20:12

How much are they?

misdee · 28/11/2004 20:13

when u say wobbly cushion, what do u mean? can u describe it better for me pls.

blossomhill · 28/11/2004 21:03

Thanks HITC - that would be really helpful. I keep thinking I should go private and then think why should I have to pay? I was speaking to the deputy head at dd's school and she said although she wasn't high priority for OT she would probably benefit as she does have some fine motor skill problems and some sensory issues.
Clairabelle - I really don't know anything other than what they are called!!!!
Misdee - A friend had one for her ds. It basically has rubber spikes on and gives the feeling of movement, which is what children with add/adhd want. Therefore helps them sit for longer!

Have you tried Magic Planet or Rompa?

magic planet

Rompa

Cannot believe the waiting list rubbish - that is shocking!!! Do you have a physio who may be able to help?

The only other thing I can think of is a cushion that IKEA sells for a whopping £9, for want of a better description it's a big inflatable furry pouffe Comes in lovely flouro colours, hmmmm......tasteful! The IKEA model is 'Kelig'.

Not sure if that's what you had in mind, but our physio recommends them for doing various exercises with, and to sit on it you have to work fairly hard at your balance.

chonky · 28/11/2004 21:07

Ooops - sorry, IKEA thingy not what you're after. Magic Planet definitely sell them though.

blossomhill · 28/11/2004 21:07

Thanks chonky I'll have a look at those

I have just found this site and looks like what I am looking for
Has anyone tried them and are they any good. Thanks BHx

I taught a child who used a 'Movin-sit Junior' cushion to help him sit still (recommended by his ed psych and occupational therapist). It did really improve his ability to concentrate and stay focussed for longer.

Have a look here \link{http://www.norlite.co.uk/shop/Wobble_Cushions.htm

Sorry! just seen your link (which worked, incidently unlike mine !)..... The only downside is that children do tend to pull out the plug, deflate it and then lose the plug, so if you do get one, watch it like a hawk.

JaysMum · 28/11/2004 21:18

Hi Blossom,
The cushion you put the link to is the same one that we use for J. He took it to school but it caused to much of a disruption in the class - the other kids kept taking it off his seat because they wanted to use it!!!
We use it at home for J now we are home teaching him and it definately stops him from squiming in his seat so much.

BH - our ds1 has been actually been seen by the OT (less than 18 months on from dx!) and she has recommended the Move'n'Sit cushion. They are supposed to be loaning one to the class to try but I don't know if he's got it yet.
Not sure if it's the same as yours - info she has sent us says the suppliers are Vidipro (UK) Ltd in Stourport on Severn tel 01299 829400. Prices are £11 for junior size and £13 for senior size with VAT and postage and 'admin charge' on top of that, so not cheap.
Will let you know if/when I find out more.

mummummum · 11/12/2004 11:42

My son has been recommend a move n' sit cushion (Junior). Dose any body know of anywhere else I can get one as Vidipro tell me they won't have any in stock until February.

Thanks
