Trying to obtain diagnosis whilst living overseas...

Hi I am hoping some of you more knowledageable parents can help us out here as I am starting to feel pretty desparate.

We have been out of the UK for over a year now and there were some indications that DS (aged 4) had some issues before we moved but we put a lot of it down to the move etc After nearly 18 months I desparately want to have him diagnosed. We have had to move schools twice and we have found a lovely private homely school were the teacher is understanding but I know our time there is limited if we don't take some action and get an assistant for him.

So before I do that I need a diagnosis so that we all know what we are dealing with. Late last year we consulted a Family Psychologist here privately and after two sessions with DS in an informal way, she has concluded that he most likely has Aspergers although she did mention ADHD also. Given all the information I've read I lean towards Asperger's more because of his obsessive behaviour and his ability to sit and concentrate for long periods on things that he wants to do!

However, she has been unable to find us someone in this country who can assist with diagnosis. And after some asking around, I have been advised to take him back to the UK to ensure this is done with people speaking our own language properly etc So today DH rang around the list on the NAS website but none of the NHS Doctors will see us privately they all want a GP referral and/or you must live in that area. Which poses us a problem as we no longer have a residential address or a GP in the UK.

We visit the UK approximately 3-4 times a year and our next visit is just after Easter for two weeks. If I find an Edcuational Psychologist (from reading on here, this is who I need) is this enough time for them to diagnose and put together a plan for us to follow?

Can anyone recommend any Ed Psy Doctors in the North West region of England as this is where we will be staying for our visits.

I desparately need a recommendation for a private educational psychologist, if anyone has one??? Please, thanks in advance.

Where are you?

It's not an Ed Psych you need. They can't diagnose either thing. You need a psychiatrist, paed or clinical psychologist, most of which can only be found in hospitals at CAMHS or Child and Family Services. Sorry - don't know how you would access them, so I think you need to google private versions in the area. Jenk1 is in NW England and knows someone (and has used them) who does private AS/ASD dxs. Good luck.

I'm in the Czech Republic. I will try and send a private message to Jenk1. Thanks, I would much prefer a recommendation if I am going to handover a lot of cash!!

I know you said that your DH rang around the list given on NAS, but have you tried ringing NAS, to see if they can help. I know that NAS do there own ASD assessment, but im not sure if you need a NHS referal.

how about e-mailing the people who run the Merseyside ASD support group, see if they can recommend someone -

Is there an international school near you , could you ask them for a recommendation for a native English speaking Developmental Paediatrician or psychologist ?
