DS had a OT assessment today and one of the tests is a pegboard with

16 holes and 12 pegs in 3 rows and he has to

take out a peg and move it up to the higher row one at a time.

DS finds this very difficult and is very slow and makes it look extremley hard work.

This is the test for 9 year olds. DS is 9½ years with Dyspraxia, hyper-mobility etc. etc.

What is this test for?

Why does DS find it so hard to do?

Is it classed as fine motor dyspraxia?

He has lots of whole body dyspraxia? IYSWIM.

Sorry can't remember the correct names

I feel very silly not to ask the OT as she is a lovely lady and would have explained it to me.

He has done these tests a couple of times before and so they are comparing to see if there has been any improvement.

Which in some things there has beenothers less so.

I realise that DS is rather older than most of the children here and so yours may not have come accross this particular test, but I thought someone may have done.

The tests are all age related. IYSWIM

Thanks for getting this far in my late night ramblings.

I'm afraid I don't know, but i'm sure someone will be along to help very soon KangaMummy.

I remember when my ds went for assessment and he had to put 4 lots of 4 different coloured pegs in a peg board with 16 holes. I presumed at the time that it was to check for colour recognition. However he refused to do it their way and did it his way but putting the first row of one colour and then proceeding round the outside square of the board, putting the coloured pegs (correctly) to make a better pattern in his opinion. He was only 4 at the time, but he came out with a dx of severely bad behaviour, which when he was 5 was changed to ADHD and Aspergers.

Good luck with your question and BUMP!

I think it might be related to assessing motor planning issues associated with dyspraxia. He'd need to plan a long term strategy in his mind and then break it down into the physical stages to be successful at the task.

ds' OT includes a task in each of their sessions be it to build something, create a game or make something. They then break it down into stages and ds carries it out. I'm not sure whether she measures his progress in that particular way though.

Sorry I have no experience of these tests but if no one comes along with the answer could you give the OT a ring on monday or drop her a line. I'm sure she'd be happy to explain it to you.

The strange thing is that he can build with lego but these pegs are so hard for him to do.

It is almost painful to watch,

Also putting 3 nuts on a bolt, screwing them right down to end IYSWIM.

The tests are standard ones for each age.
