Could this possible work? PEC's / ASD/ Behaviour

OK so at BIBIC there was a PEC's trainer present and YAY we got our training done with no extra cost or wait or anything and we're now awaiting the book etc from the pyramid site ready to start- FAB!

Now, that's DS3; was wondering if we could use the same idea with ds1 for his aggression which is terrible atm and starting to make DH seriously consider residential school, whcih I can't stomach the idea of.

What we cannot work out is WHY ds1 gets so angry he acts the way he does and we have no idea what any of his triggers are or how to spot the warning signs as he doesn't discuss private things such as emotions with anyone.

Wondered if we made a board and hung it up with 'I am feeling...... and PEC's symbols for angry, happy, scared, sad and then a line for 'This is because.....' (for which he could use the symbols on his PECs visual timtetable- school, hungry, thritsty, tired (yeah right), ill, etc etc etc

We could then hang board in front room so he could just nip in, change it and leave which I think he would find possible.

Any feedback?

That sounds like it could work Peachy - good idea! My ABA tutors are always going on about giving the child "replacement behaviour for the aggression" so that they have some way of taking out their frustration, so the PECs board could give him a form of expression which he doesn't have at present. They also recommend aversive treatment for aggression - but not everyone likes that . We used to wash my DS's hair every time he did anything aggressive, and now just occasionally we remind him of that by a small spray of water on back of head. I have a friend who is mum to three NF boys and she reckons boys do need stick as well as carrot (I don't mean stick literally, would NEVER hit a child, but do think boys need some kind of clear sign that aggression isn't right, whereas my DD more open to reason and persuasion). Anyway, good luck with it - I too cannot bear the idea of residential and would do anything to avoid!

I think it's a brilliant idea!

No experinece but it sounds like a great idea. Worth a try to give him what might feel like a safe form of communication, particuarly if he's already familier with the symbols.
Is he able to identify emotions ok or does he need some formal help/training with it?

Have you looked at social stories at all for him?
